It should have occurred to most of us by now that the actual root problem here is education, and that is why we are here, well most of us anyway.
The things we take for granted as 'common sense' are almost always things that we learned so early that we can't remember learning them at all. But we did. Thailand simply needs a proper transparent goverment (free of coups) which can run a proper pass/fail education system which teaches analytical thinking. Some public education programmes delivered via TV ads during the ever-present soaps regarding road safety, condoms, litter, sanitation, food preparation, etc would help tremendously too.
However, lest you think I'm taking the thread too seriously, here are three of mine:

There may be a small educated minority who would fit your description but 98 percent wouldn't.
Not intending to use the term with any derogatory connotations, but Thais are Xenophobic and I have personally run into very few Thais who were capable of being critical of themselves, their country or their institutions.
And it's not racist to make that observation..

There are good things about thai society and their are bad things about thai society. The same scenario applies to back home. As teachers we should know education is the key to knowledge. Thais aren't educated so they have little knowledge. Thai apologists stop claiming that thais are great. YOU will always be a farang and the thais you apologise for will never totally accept you, stop thinking the sun is shining out of somchais arse.
This is what they taught us in school. I ate it up back then .. not any more. If a nation's poverty is in the 80%tile, life expectancy in the 40's, traffic death rate at 1 per 1000 per week -- and most importantly -- if you live in that country and happen to like the people, should you not try to help? Or is it a Star Trek thing: Go where no man has gone before but don't touch anything?

Here is a project for you today. Ask 10 random Thais which countries Rome, Moscow, London, Hannoi and Auckland are in. Ask them where their king was born. Find out if they know who the beatles are. Subtract 1332 from 2100 without a calculator. Who was Adolf Hitler. etc etc I will bet you now, Bet, that at best 2 in ten will answer all the questions correctly.
