Ideas for fund-raising projects for seriously injured T.Tyler

    Hey Ajarn Readers,
I am not sure how many of you knew Teacher Tyler from Canada. This past Tuesday he suffered a serious head injury and he's in Baumrugrad Hospital in the ICU. His prognosis doesn't look good and a lot of his buddies and old co-workers are thinking about ways to raise some funds to help him and his family out.
I am wondering about anyone else's experience and advice you folks might have. Any advice will be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Jim

My prayers go out to Tyler and his family and friends.

This is bona fide. I worked with this guy at one stage. He's had a serious head injury due to a fall and is in critical condition apparently. I've heard the details second-hand myself.

Full details can be found on Facebook where a group has been set up for him.

The group is called "Get Better Tyler Alec Wilson : Our prayers are with you"

I would have posted the link but it appears i haven't made enough posts as yet......

Very sorry to hear about this. My prayers are also with him and his family.

If he was working legally he should have social security. Someone should contact the social security office and see how they can help.

There must have been a typo in the cost. Foreigners typically go to Bumrungrad coz it's cheaper than abroad (though the expertise is supposedly equal, if not better), not the other way around.

Shit, that's a really unfortunate thing... I still can't picture how it could have happened (what's an 'elevator shaft roof'?) though but in anycase looks like a miracle needs to happen here.
I wish I could afford to make just a dollar a year.

Sorry to hear about your mate.

    I hope he recovers well.

I truly, sincerely believe that in cases like this, the injured person should be allowed to pass on. Based on what I've read about Tyler's injuries, it seems unlikely that he will ever resume 'living'. For me, it is a much more sorrowful situation than the passing of a loved one.

Just last week I watched an episode of 60 Minutes which included a report about people in permanent vegetative states. The family of a fireman was featured. Every Christmas, until his passing, the family brought the father home from the care center so that he could sit motionless in a wheelchair at the Christmas dinner table.

    That's not humane. It's macabre.

    Well well,
I rarely post here. Not that I haven't gotten some good advice before, and I am still in debt to kenkannif for helping me out before I even came here. But the amount of slagging and outright rudeness of some of you is so thoroughly off putting, that I dread posting here. I'd hoped the gravity of this situation might give some cause to heed to the nature of their better angels.

As to the price of the hospital, I spent a lovely week as a patient there and it wasn't cheap (all total about $350 a day-no surgery-) but I could imagine his sister misspeaking in her grief possibly averaging the cost (surgery, etc) so far by the day.

All I know is second-hand information, a situation like this makes people feel powerless to do anything (as reality deems we actually are). I'm sure something is in the works, I was only looking for suggestions/past experiences and prayers (agnostic that I am will never deny hope)

Tyler is a buddy of mine, not really a close friend. I've been up on that roof with him half a dozen times (in Bangplad near Central Pinklao). It's a quite a view in the rainy season watching the dark storm clouds circle megalopolis and judging when to leave before the rain hits you. Like the weather, life is unpredictable....there but the grace of god go I ....kinda shit.

Daniel Bedingfield claimed that his new album is what it would sound like if Sting, Stevie Wonder and Micheal Jackson were in a basement together - I haven't got the album so I'll have to imagine the sound of a blind bloke and a Geordie kicking the shit out of a pedophile.

Re: Ideas for fund-raising projects for seriously injured T.Tyler

    Hi there

I have just signed up to give you all an update on Tyler’s condition and to clarify a few points.

You need to check the small print with these Hospitals. There was a typo on the fact that his room was costing $3000 a day, it should have read that ‘his care’ was costing that much. The room is weighing in at only a couple of hundred bucks, the hospital are doing the best they can to reduce their price to help the family. The doctors and surgeons have been incredible waiving or dramatically reducing their own fees to assist the family. Let me put it this way, top internationally trained physicians are currently working on my friend for less than most teachers get paid per day. They are doing this because he has no insurance.

Now before the righteous jump on that one, he was informed he had insurance but when we contacted his company they refused to pay as he had no work permit at the time. Guys, I would strongly suggest you skip a few heavy weekends and take care of your own insurance, many will do anything they can to avoid paying out, these guys pulled out within 5 minutes of being contacted.

The price of his care is so dramatic because of his condition. He watched the sunrise one week ago today from the roof of his apartment block. There is a room on the roof that houses the elevator mechanism, and a ladder that leads you onto its roof. He stumbled when he got up to go to his room and fell about 4 metres landing on his head. He also received other minor injuries but the net result is that he has suffered serious brain trauma. He is currently on a number of machines that are keeping him from slipping away, buying time for his body to recover.

The long and slow process of weaning off of these machines has begun but it is a bit like climbing Everest, you don’t just walk straight up it. They reduce his dependency, then put him back on, then reduce and so on. He will be going back to Canada and free healthcare as soon as is humanely possible. Realistically he will not wake up for another 2 weeks, at that time the doctors will be able to fully assess his condition. They are certain that his teaching days are over, but are cautious about commenting on his future quality of life. He may well get pretty close to being that friend we all loved and spent many a night with in Gulliver’s on KSR.

Can I ask that you gauge your responses before you post them. Behind this story there is a very real man that is vulnerable at this moment in. There are over 400 people in Canada trying to raise money at this very moment, whilst his friends here in Thailand are currently trying to organise some kind of fundraiser. All of us would appreciate your sensitivity at this time. Comments aimed at the cost of his care are also not welcome. There is no doubt in his families mind that Bumrungrad was tantamount to his life being saved, and if any of you care to put a price on that then perhaps you should think again. The cost of his care is directly linked to the fact that he is still alive, and is showing good signs of making a recovery.

The doctors and medical staff are watching him like a Jack Russell watching a squeaky ball. Their attention and care is second to none, if you want to get angry at anyone then write a letter to the drug companies and the firms who manufacturer all the machines he is currently hooked up to. That is where the costs are coming from. To attack the establishement and the excellent team of carers working within it is not only crass but insulting to say the least. No one has done it here so far, but I would like to head it off before some members figure that it may be a good angle to air their obvious intellectual abilities.

Guys, he is a human being, loved by many and cared for by a team of kind, compassionate and caring professionals. This thread began as a request for help. As I am sure you say to many of your students, ‘Please just answer the question.’ For those of you offering words of support, many many thanks from all who know and love the guy.
