Re: Spitting
Only when he's running.
GM, you'll find that urine runs off treadmills quite easily; it just sort of gets flicked off the back. Am I right, Silverfox?

Re: Spitting
You may joke about this sort of thing but it isn't in the least bit funny. One of my best friends sustained a rather nasty eye injury at the gym, when the guy in front of him crapped on a treadmill and it flew off the back and hit him in the face.

Perhaps you were the God of spitting reincarnated into this dominion to learn how to Spell Farang . In recognition of your manefestation the old people offer up some of their water to apease the angry white God.

You have got to be shitting me! (No pun intended)
And Jimbo and Nicky are right. Spitting in Korea is endemic. There's nothing like seeing a pretty Korean girl spitting on the sidewalk, an old Korean man clearing his throat loud enough to wake up the ducks on every river for five miles or the delicate Korean wife who hawks one out as she leaves the beauty parlor.
Puddles of spit everywhere in this country.

Re: Spitting
What's the fine for that in Singapore? And, yes, I have noticed the Thais spitting in the presence of farang. Lately, I have declared war on the neighborhood dogs that are allowed to chase and harass me. I let you know, when I get my first "kill." Using a one meter long piece of fence post.

Re: Spitting
i dont think you need to take it that far- most dogs will be instinctively fearful if you make the gesture of bending down to pick up a stone. they will have had enough stones thrown at them in their lives to know that it hurts. also they dont like a bucket of water.

Re: Spitting
Don't see it here:
Rules to take care of in Singapore itself
There are numerous rules in Singapore which you have to be aware of. Here will be listed the most relevant: -
Do not just cross a street in Singapore, use the dedicated pedestrians path walks. Being caught crossing the street somewhere where it is not allowed will cost you S$500.
If you are leaving Singapore by car, your tank has to be at least ¾ full. This rule only applies for Singapore cars.
Bringing in or having chewing gum is entirely forbidden in Singapore. It was banned to cut the high costs of keeping the city clean. A few times chewing gum was stuck between the doors of the MRT train and resulted in the fact that the trains we not able to run any longer. This resulted in an entire ban of chewing gum.
Littering is another 'fine' offence to the city of Singapore. Fines are set at S$500, but can rise up to S$1,000 for the first time you get caught. Being caught a second time could cause you S$2,000 and a Corrective Work Order.
Smoking is not allowed in public buses, taxis, lifts, theatres, cinemas, government offices, air-conditioned restaurants and shopping centers. Being caught for the first time will face a maximum fine of S$1,000. Smoking is only allowed in air-conditioned pubs, discos, karaoke bars and nightspots.
- Once again: DO NOT IN ANY WAY GET INVOLVED WITH ANY DRUGS. Being caught with the smallest amount of drugs will face death penalty.
Here we come full circle to Singapore. The most common tee-shirt that is bought as a souvenir from the city is one which states " Singapore is a FINE city!" True, isn't it? Well, if one looks more closely, it is evident that the sentence is bit more than mildly sarcastic, and it in effect refers to the innumerable fines which are levied for things that are concerned mundane in India - spitting, buying chewing gum, littering, peeing in lifts and feeding uncaged monkeys (the last two may be less frequent than the rest, I hope so.).
Singapore's signature T-shirt
It is not that one day the fine citizens of Singapore all decided to turn a new leaf and took a resolution never to litter/spit/jay-walk ever again. While the resolution of the populace to transform their city into a first-world enclave was the overarching theme, draconian penalties and strict enforcement were the tools. At one point, Singapore banned the ubiquitous chewing-gum so as to prevent discarded wads of gum interfering with the closure of automatic doors on subway trains. Here is a sample of what you get in trouble in Singapore for and what the penalties are - " selling or importing chewing gum S$1,000 (£370), dropping gum or litter S$1,000, dancing in public S$5,000, skateboarding S$500, smoking in most public places S$1,000, hawking without a license S$500, vandalism S$5,000 and public speaking without a permit S$2,000." So it has been a mixture of the carrot and the stick, and a pretty long stick at that.

I remember when I was in Korea there were always little piles of puke everywhere on a Saturday and Sunday morning (pissed Korean ajoshis who cant handle their soju).
Bit of a task dodging them when you are pretty wobbly legged yourself from a hard night on the turps).

Re: Spitting
The hawk-and-spit is a Nepali national pasttime since the air quality in Kathmandu is so bad. Everyone does it as part of their morning ritual and then throughout the day. Men are the worst offenders who will spit anywhere in public. For women it is seen as low-class though I have seen elderly Tibetan women in particular spitting in public.

Dunno why it's not included as an event in the Olympics (olim nose picks). Beijing 2008. China Gold, India silver, not sure who'd scoop bronze.
