Medical Checkups?
Hi,
I'm just wondering, do you have a doctor that you visit for regular checkups? How much does it cost you per check up? What kind of insurance do you have to off set the cost.
Also, in America they have 401Ks, here in Canada we have RRSPs along with some other types of investments for retirement... what do you expats living in Thailand have... we can't teach forever!
Thank You

Re: Medical Checkups?
It all depends whether you want the Dr. to put his finger up there or not, hehe.
A visit costs about 200Baht($6).
Oh and you have 3 options for retirement:
1. 401k/IRA/RRSP etc
2. Have lots of kids and teach them to support their parents
3. Wait until you're 65, go to pattaya, have sex with 800 women, then jump off a hotel.
I'm working on option #2 because I can't transfer money using a GODDAM THAI VISA CARD!!!

Dude stop trying to be funny as you are not. A full medical checkup is expensive here. Stress test, lower GI test, EKG and the such. I believe around 2500 baht minimum.
The OP is not talking about a health clearance.

Re: Medical Checkups?
I got a check up (for my WP so not a real one) for like 60 Baht...they just looked me up and down!!!
My insurance is not having a check up....I find that offsets what I'm not paying.
You have to tell me off now as well AO.....my attempt at humour SUCKS!!!

OK, so it's $85 for a full medical rundown with a GI/EKG/etc. A GI is where they put their finger up there right?

I go once a year for a health check-up and it costs in the region of about 12,000 baht and you're there virtually all day doing an assortment of tests, etc and it ends with a doctor consultation. Admittedly I do tend to use Samithiwej because it's nice and quiet and very well organised. I guess plenty of hospitals offer considerably cheaper deals.

Re: Medical Checkups?
Health checks are just a scam. The only thing they can detect are genetic diseases(a once in a lifetime test), and cancer(oh and hiv). For males, you just stick your finger up your ass and see if there are any lumps on your prostate or lumps on your testicles.
For high blood pressure, you can buy a device for $20 which will measure this and you can use it as often as you like. Same thing with a weight scale. If you lose a lot of weight suddenly, ok go to the Dr. If your blood pressure is high, ok seek a Dr.
Otherwise, here is what a health checkup consists of (in the USA):
- Blood Panel($5-$25 in Thailand)
- Renal Profile-Piss test($5 in Thailand)
- Eye check(free at an optics shop)
- Cardiologist Evaluation-Blood pressure($free usually or included with a Dr. visit)
- Stress test- Run on a treadmill and measure your blood pressure and heart rate(any gym can do this)
- Physician examination: Does it hurt when I press on your tummy? Does your knee kick when I hit your tendon? Are your pupils dilated? Is your throat red? Your ear canal? Nasal passage?
Sure you can get a ton of X-rays if you want to increase your chances of getting cancer... They're only useful if you have a broken bone, and you'd know if your bone was broken... SURE you can get them to put a camera up your butt and make a video to show your kids... I'm sure you can get them to do all kinds of whacky things for lots of money if it makes you feel good.... but the truth is, the only things that they can detect are genetic disorders and cancer(oh and hiv). The rest come on suddenly or have definite indicators.
You can get all your vaccines and that would be good but most health checkups don't do this. You can get an STD test if you're sexually active and that would be good, but not all places do this...
You know I've been through several "exams". Unless you're ill, it's pointless to see a Dr. other than to make you feel good. I've had Drs give me x-rays for TB even though I've had the skin test and no symptoms.. They take my blood and check my blood count even though I'm perfectly healthy and have no signs of anemia. They have never run a gene test(which would actually be useful). They never check my eyes(even though I can't see as far I used to). They just push on my tummy and ask if it hurts, etc. Listen to my breathing to see if there's any wheezing... Really a scam...

surely scientology guy is referring to younger guys. if youre young and take reasonably good care of yourself theres not much reason to get a full checkup more often than every 5 years. once you get over 35, then every 2-3 yrs, after 50, every year.
