Ex-pats clubs & associations
I have been considering joining one of the many ex-pats clubs/ associations that have sprung up in Thailand over the last hundred years or so. I am in need of a little farang friendship (hell, I might even meet a proper lady) after spending too much time in the company of Thais & think a club or association may be the solution.
The problem is that I'm not sure just what they get up to, I assume there is an equivalent to a student union bar, which is a good start. I was once invited along to the ex-pats club near the Narai (sp) hotel in the Silom district, but the idiot who invited me didn't tell me that I had to wear a shirt & tie, so I was refused entry.
Are there any members or former members of ex-pat clubs/ associations in Thailand that could give me the low down as to what to expect. Or have you heard any rumours as to what goes on within their hallowed walls?
Thanks!
Here are some quoted contact details (maybe out of date), should you wish to join a club/ association yourself.

I am interested to know what a proper lady is. Presumably you don't rank Thai women in that catagory. Nothing wrong with that but I am curious why you have that opinion. Please enlighten me.
How the hell do you manage to get that fly or beetle running round?

Re: Ex-pats clubs & associations
I think that he is perhaps referring to class rather than ethnicity.

Really?
Joining an expat club to meet proper ladies has nothing to do with ethnicity?
Tell me more.
And, while you're at it, can you also explain why it's somehow preferable to be looking for a better class of people amongst the expats?
Clearly your channel island roots are showing.
It's quite a rare moment to think that if you actually DID come from leeds you might be more enlightened on this topic.
Scary, in fact.

Re: Ex-pats clubs & associations
^ Loads of Thais, men and women in the various expat(ish) clubs. If I were single and new in Bangkok I'd be straight down these networking evenings and expat club dos.
Why ? (a) Most of the (Thai) lasses there have a career and are not after a sugar daddy and (b) they speak good English.
I think I'm a member of the Informal Northern Thai Group ... at least I went to a few of their talks and I'm on their email list.

Re: Ex-pats clubs & associations
There's also the British club in BKK but I don't think it's cheap. Don't know if many classy lasses go there though..
Anyway it's a good idea to go to expat clubs, especially for retirees who live here and want to meet others.

I didn't think that locals would be excluded from a club established in their own country, could be wrong though.

I'm not, like I said I was just guessing.

I totally agree with you on these points, my upbringing was very sheltered.

Re: Ex-pats clubs & associations
Woops. I said yes before I knew what type of club was being asked about.
I belong to the Phuket Football Club but it's more about football than getting together to network and/or slag off Thais.
