We would rather be ruined than changed
We would rather die in our dread
Than climb the Cross of the moment
And see our illusions die
Why? They will stay, and be used the way the are now dont ya think. Part of the magnificent culture.![]()

Too long like a rolling stone, Too long in exile
Too long in Exile, baby you just arent my friend.
Too long in Exile my friend, Baby you can never go home again.
AO, I think the reason people post that Thai numbers will die out is because they don't understand them or want to use them. It's a way of projecting your own views and trying to make it a trend. It's a bit like when I decided to move to Thailand, I told my friends and they all thought it was a terrible idea. Not because it was, but because they couldn't imagine themselves moving to another country.
Of course if things keep going the way they are we'll all be using the Chinese system ーニミ used in both China and Japan.

sheesh...spend 30 minutes and memorize them.
if you need to know to find where youre working, 10 symbols aint hard.
you might in fact feel like youre paaaarticipating wiiiiiithe the chiiiiildreeeen.
could even *gasp* be funny if you drew 'em on the board and showed your kids youre trying to learn *gasp*
.....having said that. i give the numbering system a good 15-20 beforeout of use
you simply cant keep your own numbers and expect to be competitive globally. or maybe they will keep them, but just use them less. either way, they will be here- to a varying degree of usage
how about the clock?that always strikes me as funny when i ask studetns what time they go to bed and they say 5 o'clock
"haa toomb" DOH! no, thats 11 o'clock.

Eh? If the students have a poor grasp of how to read the time in English isn't that a reflection of teaching skills? I don't see how measuring the day in 6 hour periods is less vaild than in 12 hour periods.
But if you want to write 200, 2,000, 20,000, 2,000,000, 2,000,000,000 or even 2,000,000,000,000, you would need only 2 characters each.
Actually you get a lot of hybridisation, with many prices written as 236 and the character for ten thousand to mean 2,360,000

im shocked at the accusation?
i need to teach students how to tell time- all of them! its my job to make sure they know time. in fact, i alter all syllabi to correct this travesty!
...really, a majority to thai people i know dont tell time consistently. ive noticed this a lot. not just my students.
got any other great teaching tips, like how im responsible for any verb-agreement errors?:
when they say "ex-pensive" i blush because its my fault they have accents and L1 interference
well, its less valid when they dont know how to communicate the time.
i cant speak for others, but ive heard thais messing up AM, PM, evening times, morning....etc.
i dont know of another place that has a 6 hour clock. maybe theres lots of countries who do that. seeing how thailand needs tourism, might be a good idea to recruit those countries to visit!![]()
