    It seems to me that the use of Thai numbers is being consciously preserved by bureaucrats and the military. Remember that military vehicles also use Thai number index plates.

    Also another related confusion forms and stuff -- vehicles tax discs are a good example use the two Thai letter abbreviation for the month only, something else to learn.

    did it ever cross anyones mind that the Thais can read these numbers without developing a headache? That they are part of their culture? Jeez.

    ...And, of course, Thais are not the only ones to have their own numerals. Just look at the Middle East. And even Laos has its own system (though similar in appearance to the Thai/Khmer numerals, they are in fact quite different). There is no more reason for these numerals to die-out than for the Thai alphabet to die-out.

    Similar principle, yes, except that the names of Thai months have different endings, depending on how many days there are in each month. Example:

    Jan = Mogaraa-kom มค

    Feb = Gumpaa-pan กพ

    March = Meenaa-kom มีค

    April = Mesaa-yon มย

    May = Preutsapaa-kom พค

    June = Mitunaa-yon มิย

    July = Garogadaa-kom กค

    August = Singhaa-kom สค

    September = Ganyaa-yon กย

    October = Dturaa-kom ตค

    November = Preutsajigaa-yon พย

    December = Tanwaa-kom ธค

    But, with logic like that, it is perhaps easier to learn the Thai months than the English ones (although I still struggle).

    You are one up on me. But I mostly walk around with two 11 year simultaneous translators most of the time.

    When visiting the public nature park, the zoo or something like that just point to the squiggles and say 1 of those please, never fails, always get the Thai price with a smile providing I say thanks in Thai. Most of the time I get "thank you back" in English when I pay the local price. LOL.

    agree I struggle too but the Thais are really very forgiving when you try.
