    Hospitilization in Thailand

A few months ago I took a trip to Thailand to see my girl and we wanted to hit the beach, but couldn't get very far away because she had to be back at work. Her sister runs a hotel on Jomtien beach and could let us stay there for very little money so we ended up there. I ate something that didn't agree with an antibiotic that I was taking at the time and ended up in the hospital for a few days. I believe it was the Pattaya/Bangkok hospital. It was a really nice place actually...flat screen tv., fridge in the room, microwave, couch for overnight stay and it didn't seem that expensive by comparison to what I would have paid in the United States.

My girl's sister told her that she didn't trust that hospital and it was her opinion that they would overcharge me for being there or try to keep me longer to get more money out of me. Anyone have experiences with hospitilization in Thailand and what did you think?

As a side question, any ideas of beaches closer to Bangkok than Pattaya that are nice? I'm not too crazy about Pattaya even if the hotel is really cheap.

Never been in that one, but I did end up with Dengue Fever and did a week in a hospital in Ratchaburi. I'm insured so it didn't cost me a thing. So far my and my wife's experiences are okay. But I do bloody hate going. Only once in 6 years so far.

I've seen the nice brochures of BKK hospital in Pattaya, the prices seem pretty damn cheap for what you're getting, cheaper than what most hotels are charging for the same thing, was thinking about staying there for a night or two just for the hell of it.

hope you are feeling better now.
luckily i have never been in hospital myself, but visited a mate a few times at rama 9 hospital in bkk; what a place that is, like the hilton. anyway, they were always very fair to him there, and if you get quotes up front for your stay, scans and tests ect, you should be ok.
not sure about other beaches closer to bkk, and i understand your thoughts on pattaya, but the missis and i have grown to like the far end of jomtien beach, just keep walking, it gets better; ok the beach is not samui but we like it for a week.
    cheers

    Re: Hospitilization in Thailand

I've been in three times at three different hospitals. Always had great nurses and doctors who tried their best to deal with me in English or a mix of Thai and English. When I was out of the big city (once in Nan and once in Nakhon Nayok) and had to pay a visit to the hospital, I found the regular rooms a bit scary, but for a small price, a big, clean, tv inc, couch, etc. private room was easily arranged. My stay at the Pattaya International Hospital (i think its called that) 5 years ago was great, but I also got the feeling that I was told that I needed to stay there a day or two more than necessary. As Kikiat already mentioned, it's roughly the same as a decent hotel anyways, so no big deal. Other than that, never felt overcharged and was told most charges up front.

Now, the insurance companies are a different story.

Cha-am, Petchaburi, Hua Hin area are all about the same distance in the other direction. Hua Hin is slowly becoming another Pattaya however. I like Cha-Am though. Great restaurants.

Actually, I do have one bitch; the mattresses are bollocks. Thin and hard. I had to sleep on the couch. Dengue is called the bone breaking disease, you fecking hurt everywhere; so a thin, hard matress is the last thing one needs.

I've noticed this of matresses in Thailand. They all seem pretty uncomfortable to me or maybe I just stay in cheap places, but even looking at them at the Thai supermarket places...carrefour or whatever you call it...they seemed sort of uncomfortable.

thank you. I am feeling better.

I'll take a look at Cha am in the future. I'd really like to find a place where there are fewer farang. Been to Samui, Krabi, Phuket, Koh Chang, and Phi phi. I would really like to check out the Similan islands. Looks beautiful.
