Only it will be a lot different than what happened with the Soviet Union - if it happens at all.
Surely the Chinese will have learned some lessons from watching Russia deteriorate into what it is today.
Whatever reforms (for good or worse) China adopts will definitely have that old cliche "Chinese characteristics." Like in the current government...capitalism with "Chinese characteristics."
Chinese characteristics - what are they exactly? Dishonesty? Blatant disregard for international law? What country doesn't have these characteristics? They're certainly not unique to China.
Thailand could easily go communist. That's probably what will end up happening. Hope not, but that's how I see things...
^...does the sky actually fall on your planet?...
no they're all going to turn into western style liberal plutocracies like thailand; little outward change, but a submission to the demand for personal liberty for all, even if the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. allowing the spark of mind to manifest, as it weren't yet, since fuckin confucius or something.
everybody knows all that shit, that mythology and those flimsy cultural constructs are just what they are. they may not articulate it, but they know it. it can't go on forever, no matter how determined some may be, to maintain the current structure, many more are not. and that's the way it'll go. sooner or later.
letting people think what they want will have it's cascade effect, in culture and technology and social development, people can say alll kinds of things about the stuckness and backwardness of southeast asia and wherever else, but that argument just doesn't wash anymore, these are very young societies, and the changes will be rapid. i've got to know 100's of kids here, they're not much in tune with their parents; they have their own ideas about shit.
but in the end it's the money that will change things. freedom to think and access thought will mean more money, and that's what will make it stick.

Thailand is a Stalinist type totalitarian state but because everyone is so docile, there is no need for purges.

oh but shit is happening. it's always happening and it never stops. money changes everything.
Unfortunately they'll never block Thai Wheezer. They've developed arse licking and kickbacks down to an art form. I'd love to see it and it's whore-mongering owners and shirt lifting hanger ons go down in flames.![]()
Every idiot knows what will happen to Thailand once.....
I'll be watching the developments on CNN from Canada.
nothing blocked here today. Good.

Too long in Exile my friend, Baby you can never go home again.
...I'm gradually forming an opinion, from reliable sources, that the "blocking" was, surprisingly, due to ministerial incompetence, misunderstanding, and a huge dose of the "oops" factor...

Change is certainly coming pretty soon here in LOS. Those Thais who have or see opportunity here have to consider the future. Peace is a nice idea if you want everything to remain as it is. Some may want to secure resources for the coming potential turmoil. Who knows where those weapons were going? Some of us are alive and willing to fight for whatever it is we want. This Buddhist country is filled with lots of people green with envy and brimming with desire.
When my mother went into the nursing home a few weeks turned into a few months and before long she was gone; she never left that building. We all knew that the day she entered. There's always a wild hope but you've just got to accept reality. Change is on it's way.
