Really, you must have stayed in Jaco.. I stayed in Mal Pais and Montezuma, It was a totally different vibe.
Small towns, people say hello and don't nervously avoid eye contact. I met a lot of people in Khao San, (mostly girls) but it was drunk in a bar type shit. On the Nicoya Peninsula you can meet people anywhere and the vibe was much more receptive.
---Update---
I've found myself staying in victory monument and I really like this area. The hotel I'm staying at could be better. I'm beginning to call thailand the "land of the hidden fee." How are you going to have a pool and a shitty gym then charge people to use it. Same with Wifi..
I'm paying 620 a day, which isn't bad, but considering i have to pay 50 baht to use the pool and 90 to use the internet for the day I think there might be better deals to be had. Let me know if you guys can think of any cool spots in this area.. I'm gonna do more exploring and try to find out.

Where would you like to live? Inner Bangkok, the outskirts like Nonthaburi and Pathumthani? Or in Northern Thailand?
You can get a furnished apartment for 5-6 k @ www.pgp.co.thbut forget it if you are going to teach in Bangkok.
There are nice small towns if you just want to stay a month and send off your CV and take phone calls. www.nanguesthouse.net charges 4.5 k for an aircon room. Wifi and drinking water are included. Shirt ironing/ @ 5 Baht per shirt, full service 10 Baht. And you can rent a new bike for 2.5k or an old one @ 1.5 k. Nan-Travel, trekking, rafting, hiking, cooking and tourism in Nan province. If you still cannot find a place to stay, and can accept living outside inner bangkok area.

SK tower near Suk Soi 38 rents serviced studios for 700 baht/night or ~10,000/month. I would definitely not recommend it as a long term option but I don't think you need to sign a lease or anything so I think it's a good short term option. Just stay there 'till you find work then relocate to a spot closer to where you stay. BTW it is less than a 5 min walk from the Tong Lor BTS station.

Check out Nonthaburi, especially around Pakkret (Pakkred). It's a little further out, but the bus is cheap.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
For 6,000 THB your going to have to walk quite a bit to get to the MRT but it can be done.
