For a one year Thai licence I never had to show a WP but for the 5 year I did. I have been driving here for 16 years.

curious - thought they'd at least want something with a photo on it - I once flew from Chiang Mai to BKK and didn't have my passport on me, they were happy with my DL but only cos it had a photo - maybe old bill are different, or different in different places

Sounds logical...a photo is more pukka.
What about buying a car? Probably new...
Can I buy a car legally and easily?
Do I need to show visa? Do I need to show proper DLicence in order to get insurance?? What is the situation re insurance? Is it fully comp? Is it any good?

A new car with financing yes you will need to show a lot of documentation. A used car from a tent or a private party no worries at all. I find Bangkok insurance to be very good. Have used them for 14 years, and 2 accidents. Not a problem at all, and the claims agent has shown up very quickly both times.

We bought a two year old car in Bangkok.
The dealer, who was recommended to us and was very good, did all the paperwork. He needed copies of our passports and work permits, sent it all to have the registration fixed up.
We insured through a friend who is an insurance agent.
We're using internaitonal licences plus we have Australian licences.
I recommend you get your internaitonal licence BEFORE you come to Thailand. In Brisbane it only took 10 minutes and a showing of our passports to get it for just $20.
Haven't had to show our licences yet, but I'm sure it will happen.
The booklet with the internaitonal licence says Australian licences are accepte din Thailand under a reciprocal agreement. DOn't have it here but I'm pretty sure the same is true of UK licences.

You better get it before, otherwise it will not be legitimate but BOGUS. Referring to the INT licence. You have to get an INT licence from your country of residence. Hence when I go to the home mine is issued in Thailand.

Just went to the ministry of land and Transport. No work permit, forget it! They even insisted on a letter from my Embassy, didn't need one before and this was for my renewal. You get five years. I even tried to offer money, but no way. YOu need wp. dl. doctor's letter. If you want a motorcycle licence then you need 2 sets of photo copies! Youe UK licence lets you use bikes up to 150cc. So once you have your licence, you can buy any bike. I have to send back to my own country to get a new international one.

Got my Thai license on Friday, needed-
Work permit to verify address plus photocopy of first 3 pages,
Passport, plus photocopy of the photo page, the Non-Imm visa, the TM card (departure), the last extension stamp,
medical cert.
2 x 1 inch photos--make sure they are 1 inch!!
Filled in the form, took the joke of a test (only took the first 2, colour blindness and reaction didn't take depth of field)
2 hours later got licence, 105 Baht plus 10 Baht to get it laminated outside on the street!!
don't worry if you forget photos, there are plenty of vendors outside who will do it for you,
got mine in Pathumthani

Driving License
Just got my driving licenses for motorcycle and car. UK photo license holders don’t have to take a test apart from eye, reaction, color. Two hours. Staff were POLITE, EFFICIENT AND FRIENDLY. This was at Sukhumvit Soi 99 + about 50 meters. Although I used Thai throughout there is not much to it. You only have to fill in your signature on everything and sign all the copies. And Bob’s your uncle. I had been dreading taking anther test for weeks.

+ Photocopy –
Passport and visa pages
Work permit – to show address
Health certificate
105 baht car
55 baht motorcycle
20baht x 2 for lamination (optional)
Copies available at 1 baht each on the premises
Two photos for each license also available on the premises
I went for the motorcycle only as I thought I was going to have to do a driving test. The woman at the counter looked at my license and said – do you want the car license as well? – OK, just go and make another set of copies of everything. 9 baht and the copy woman is trying to give me 1 baht back from 10 baht. No test because there are the little pictures of the vehicles you can drive on the back of the UK photo license.

Thanks for that info, Mig.
Less than £2. Sure beats the £45 a time fee to take your test in the UK.
Added after 3 minutes:
What if you don't have a WP. Can you show a letter from the Police instead?
