A certified copy of your residence from your embassy. I think its about 75 bucks now. You'd think with this TM shit they would damn well know where we live.

I had to get a few of those confirmation of address letters from the UK embassy before. They are over 1,500 baht now. That's why I'd prefer the 50 baht PC Plod one.

I was told that all you need is a statement of residency from the Immigration Police, as you do to buy a motor vehicle. I had a list from the Chiang Mai driving license office and that's all they wanted for the residency.

I'm afraid to take the vision tests, but the folks there supposedly are very obliging.

I did not see anyone fail that I could tell – out of about 50 people. About 10, including me did not hit the peddle quick enough on the reaction test but everyone did on the second try.

The other tests are.

Color – say the color of dots, red, green and yellow at a distance of about ten paces

Depth perception test – line up some sticks by using a remote control

Peripheral vision – say the color of lights as you rest your chin into a little box

The only distance test was the color one

A letter from the local Immigration Office is indeed sufficient to guarantee your residence.

I obtained 5-year licences for both motorcycle & car, 2 weeks ago.

200 baht where I live

Added after 2 minutes:

I presume it is a Government Office but the workers were not in uniform and were efficient and friendly. So maybe not!

Added after 5 minutes:

There is an office just past Sukhumvit Soi 99 about 3 little turns past 99 is a wide concrete road. About 500 yards down on the left – it’s the only thing down there.

motorcycle schools?

I travel to and from work everyday by motorcylce taxi, have had several semi-regular, semi-reliable drivers, and spend about 5 000 baht/ month for transport. I'm begining to think it would be more economical and reliable to just buy a bike and drive myself, but am not too confident that I would be able to navigate the Bgk. traffic. Does anyone know of a motorcycle driving school or course? I don't know how to drive a m.c. so would be starting from scratch.

Great question -- I'm wondering the same thing myself, as I'm going to have to start driving one to get to work. A few of my colleagues have been helping me, but a school would be great.

I certainly don't know of a motorcycle training school. If there is one I'd be gobsmacked! All I know is that a team from Honda came to a business where I do some corporate and did a road safety programme with defensive riding. Maybe your local dealer could help. If you're a first time rider your best bet would be a 100-125cc bike with an automatic clutch like a Honda Wave. It's pretty simple to operate. Try to avoid a bike with a clutch until you're more competent or confident. So basically keep away from A 2006 CBR 1000 Fireblade.

Don learn in downtown BKK no matter what. A few months ago Mamite wanted to learn to ride. He came out to my place in the burbs with young Mathew, and they both cruised around for a couple of hours on my bike. Both got much better. But where I live is a safe place to learn.
