Yes. Had to write and pass the Thai test. They have English versions available. Also had to do a practical driving test. M/cycle and car.

International Driver's License
Does anyone know where to get an International Driver's License here in Thailand?
If you have one from Thailand, what procedures did you have to go through to get it?

Re: International Driver's License
Ministry of Transport.
There are several locations around Bangkok but the main one is directly across the road from Chatachuk market and next to Mo Chit BTS station.
If you have a valid license from your home country you can get one easily for a 500B fee, with maybe another 100B or so for photocopies and a photo. Do the photos at the MoT as they use a special type of matte finished paper that allows them to stamp over without smudging. You will need your passport with current visa, your valid foreign drivers license and a lot of patience as the lines can be long.
Be warned that the International Drivers license from Thailand is based on International law agreements from the 1960s and may not be well received overseas.
If you don't have a current valid license from your home country then you will have to sit the drivers test, pass a practical test, and a medical test, hold a Thai license for 1 year and then you can get the international one. I had to do it this way as my Australian license had expired. When I returned to Oz I had to do the written and practical test again to get my Australian license. The Thai International license only allowed me to drive for 1 month under Aussie law and they didn't like it.
I'm pretty sure there are previous threads covering this.

Re: International Driver's License
The last time I arrived in the states and presented my international license they pulled out a book that documented it was real. The book had many examples of dodgy fake licenses.

Re: International Driver's License
On a trip to Italy a few years ago I had my wallet stolen with my California Drivers License in it. Since then I have gone back to California twice and rented a car with my Thai issued international drivers license and Thai license with no problems at all.

Re: International Driver's License
You cant use the Thai alone though as the only thing in English on it is your name.

Thanks Umbuku!
I'm wondering if anything has changed with regards to the language on the DL. What other countries will be able to read Thai? Somebody needs to get them to use English for these International Drivers' Licenses. I could understand if it was a Thai DL, but this is an international one and most countries (last I heard anyway) will use English as their lingua franca, 1st, 2nd or maybe even 3rd language. Perhaps I can at least try to get a certified translation of the DL just incase someone overseas can't read it.

Re: Driving License
Mine has English translations on it.
Bloody inconvenient in size though, being passport sized.

I went to the Ministry of Transportation and I found out that you need a Thai Driver's License for at least two years before they will issue you an International Driver's License. I spoke with three people there and they all said the same things. This was one near Mo Chit station. I showed them my current DL from my home country and that didn't do any good. They insisted that I needed a Thai DL and it had to be issued for at least two years.
