Tony

I refused for a year to take the mandatory social insurance at school because they would not tell me what it covered. Instead I took out a BUPA package - second top package.

This year I renewed my BUPA package and about a month later I was forced to take on the social insurance and nominate my two local private hospitals as my nominated hospitals.

I also took out fully comp insurance on my motorbike - 300,000B I decided that it was a good idea. - it gives me and my passanger 100k each health cover - or maybe 150k each can't remember now.

Now if I get sick which insurance do I use first my BUPA or my Social.

If god forbid I fall off the bike - which insurance do I claim on first for health. My BUPA only covers 50% of the costs if its a bike accident.

Buggered if I can work it out

With Social Security insurance you can go to a private hospital only if it is a "registered" participant in the SSO program. You can go to a "non-registered" hospital only if you require emergency care because of an accident or serious illness and you have no other choice. But the amount they will reimburse you is more limited. With BUPA, you can go to a "non-member" hospital and get reimbursed later.

The maximum Daily Room and Board benefit paid by SSI is only 700 baht a day. If you want a more expensive room you have to pay the extra yourself. But they say they will pay 100% of all of your other medical expenses. They will also pay you half your salary while you are hospitalized or otherwise disabled.

It's not a bad deal. The major problem they have with the program is that many of the "registered" hospitals end up losing money on the deal and drop out.

So, what should you do? That depends on you. If the subscriber hospital near you is satisfactory for your needs, use it and use BUPA to cover the additional cost of the room. If you are really lucky, the "subscriber" hospital will also be a BUPA "member" hospital and you won't have to pay anything out of your pocket. Your other option is to go to the "non-subscriber" BUPA "member" hospital of your choice and not use SSI at all for inpatient hospitalization.

About your accident insurance: Insurance like that usually pays on top of any other coverage you have. It often even allows you to make a profit from your accident. Check with the company you got the policy from.

Tony,

I've been warned that the major Thai insurance companies often stall and dispute payments to farangs. Is this true?

I worked for HSBC in England and while we were meticulous about what was required for a claim, we would always pay for a genuine claimant. I fear it may be different over here.

No, it isn't. I don't doubt that disputes and delays do occur at times, but they are usually due to misunderstandings. They certainly are not due to any conspiracy against farangs.

Speaking from my experience with THI, if you have to use a non-member hospital THI is committed to reimbursing you within 15 working days of receiving your completed paperwork, or sooner.

In order to avoid misunderstandings that cause delays, we issue all of our clients a list of instructions on how to claim and we attach the required forms to the list. THI has authorized us to submit claims by fax in order to help speed the process up for farangs.

If you go to one of the many member hospitals throughout Thailand, reimbursing you is not even a consideration. They pay directly to the hospital.

I'd actually say you're more likely to get fobbed off in the UK IMO. My son has been in for the same thing time after time, I think in the UK a flag would have been waved by now.

Zone A is on a distinguished road
I'm interested to know if anyone has used their insurance policy from Tony. I hear some good reports. I'm covered through Tony's insurance which I haven't used to date. I would like to learn about your experiences on using this insurance. Of course there isn't such thing as a perfect policy unless you are prepared to pay a lot of money for it. This is basic cover from which i expect to get basic cover. for me it's for the piece of mind and knowing if something does happen i have a least some cover which makes me feel comfortable in myself.

I signed up today for another year with Thai Health...and so did 10 or more of my colleagues and staff. Very reasonable rates if you are on a group policy.

i'm working at a govt. uni and have been given some sort of medical insurance (i have no idea of the name) that most of my colleagues say provides adequate coverage. i want to supplement it with another policy that will get me a private room and other niceties.

what's the next step tony?

You might want to consider THI Major Medical. It was designed to supplement basic hospital coverage.

thanks for your reply tony.

however, i'm still wondering about a few things....

let's say that the insurance from my uni doesn't cover a private room....will THI major medical pay for that?

what hospitals are within your 'network'?

:chug:
