I was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm going out to do a TEFL course in Phuket in the spring and I had no plans to drive a moped until my friend told me it would be very difficult to get around if I didn't. He said the taxis are way too expensive on a teacher's salary. Is this true? I was hoping I could use the buses, partly because of safety! Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.
You can use the tuk tuk buses, they're cheap, but obvioulsy only if the school and your accommodation are convenient.
Not always a good idea to find the cheapest accommodation if it's expensive/hard to get to.
Sur votre bicyclette, mate.
Not easy around Phuket. Certainly need a motorbike if you plan to travel between towns on a regular basis. Stay near the school is the best bet, like he said![]()
I did TEFL there and stayed walking distance from the school. Every other weekend or so I hired a jeep (700bt) to have a look around as it were. I ain't motorcycle friendly you see!
Excuse me for not taking this seriously .....
My cousin broke both her legs getting around pohuket by motorsi...4 wheels good IMO!

Don't get me wrong - I don't want a 'serious' board but I'd like posts to be either genuinely amusing, informative and/ or thought provoking.

I lived there and rode a bike there for at least 1.5 years and only got bumped by a car once. They certainly do have their own driving style in Phuket. It IMO is way to expensive not to have one if you intending on doing other than your course.
I really do not like the Tuk Tuk marfia!!!

But if you just want to get from A to B cheaply, do you have to like them? What are your experiences?
Wear a pair of jeans and a helmet if you decide to ride there. Shorts won't save ur skin being scraped off.

Thanks for your responses everyone. My experience on a moped is that I turned into a speed freak on a Greek island and inevitably fell off, scratching the skin off one arm and a leg! I wouldn't be like that this time around, but I know what it's like and I'd rather not use one, especially not in a foreign country.
