6 Months At Burger King
HELP WANTED
Hmmm....a new gig.
Fresh-faced and 16. A few red dots on my face now and then--zits they call 'em--and a desire to get some spending money. What's the quickest and easiest route to get some green backs for beer and gas money and a few CDs?
Fast food joints.
They're everywhere, and always putting up those "HELP WANTED" displays in large, blocky, black plastic letters on those eyesoric, but effective plastic billboard signs that have that dull, pale, neon shimmer.
Can't remember much about filling out the application. I remember reading something under "education." High school attended, the address, city, and state, and what GPA I got. In those days....seriously....I was worried about fibbing on the GPA, because I thought the manager might even check. Pretty funny now, that I think about it.
This fast food Burger King experience (that is forgotten immediately after leaving your shift temporarily, and permanently, after you get a better job in a couple months) was the first time that many people come in contact with the way "the world really works," so to speak.
Here are some of the things that I consciously, sub-consciously, and unconsciously became aware of:
1. Work - even a short-term, part-time gig at a burger joint is NOT school.
2. You will have to be with and *deal with* people who you DON'T like, and don't like to BE, around.
3. Small politeness and niceties aren't common and they're actually not useful.
4. You HAVE to LEARN how to do something 1. efficiently (read quick) and 2. correctly.
5. At a fast food restaurant, people who are working there full-time at 35 - yes thirty-five years of age - are NOT people you want to emulate.
6. You realize there is an entirely different world outside of your family, your friends, your neighborhood, and your ambitions.
I didn't come from a rich family. I didn't get a car on my sixteenth birthday. I never went without anything, and I had more than a lot of others at my school. But life at 16 (for those lucky enough) is a life free of worries. A life of living under an umbrella of mom and dad. School was for socializing and laughing. Weekends were for keg parties, and going for the girls. Having fun.

well all i can say is well done snaffie, you are probably now earning the same money as u did when u was 16
my first job was as a car mechanic gopher, i spent the first month sanding down some poxy old car for a measly 35 quid per week, from there my career just rushed forward, well untill i was 25 and the recession started

Wow.
you know how much I earned per hour?
$3.35 USD per hour. This was in 1987.
And you know what?
The standard raise after a couple of months was .05!
A nickel!

believe it or not i have know idea how much i make per year, actually i shall try and work it out, it would be quite interesting to compare my current income level to uk standards, although over the last 4 years my monthly bills have more than doubled but are still quite low.
although i should add that 16 years ago i was earning more 33,000 dollars per year and i saved absolutely zilch of it, but fuck i did have a wild time
actually i think a thread is in order for monthly outgoings

There are probably a lot of factors (maybe there aren't).
For me, I exlude a mortgage (which does give us equity and appreciation), and I include the fixed costs of being back home. The things I have to pay for: insurance, medical premiums, taxes, user fees, etc.

Yeah, Snaff, I used to audit personal income tax returns in the USA. Guys and successful women would come in with employee W-2 statements showing they earned even more than $60,000 in the prior year. But the other documents proved no interest income, no dividend income, no capital gains. In other words, no savings at all. And then they wondered why, if they were making so much, something seemed to be wrong.

I agree, PB.
And I am the exception to the rule.

Attention!
The poster "Snaff" is NOT me.
The writing style and tone is different.
I am taking an extended break from the board but am logging in to check my PMs.
This poster "Snaff" is NOT me, Mr_Snafu.
Take care.

Hey numb-nut, I fly out in 4 days.
I still get PMs occasionally and I am going to meet some poster before I leave so we care communicating.
Eat sh*t.
And "Snaff," you are copying my story titles and posting like a sissy.
Get a little mean will ya.
Now....I'll try to log out and not read the bullsh*t that is being thrown at me.
Please let me leave in peace.
