    Mystery Jim Thompson, CIA spy

New book out on Jim Thompson:

New, Darker Portrait of Legendary American

Forty-five years after vanishing into a jungle without a trace, "Silk King" Jim Thompson remains a daily presence in Thailand: Shoppers crowd his elegant stores and the American expatriate's antique-rich residence is one of the capital's top tourist attractions.

Credited with the revival of a now booming silk industry, Thompson attained legendary status, enhanced by a bon vivant lifestyle at a time when Thailand was still truly exotic — and by his mysterious death. But little has been known about Thompson's intensely political, darker side — his freelance backing of Asia's insurgencies, clashes with Washington's Cold War warriors and his connections to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, which to this day reportedly refuses to release his complete file.

Jim Thompson and his disappearance and even who he may have been working for has always been an enigma. One needs to remember that there was a lot of covert infiltration in this region by all of the worlds main powers from the 1950's onward. The truth if ever came out in the open it would indeed be an interesting revelation.

All rather much like the Commander Buster Crabb affair in England when the Russian fleet was in port and Buster was having a look around at the ships underwater structure and he vanished, or possibly Buster may have been returning to his controller.

Like Jim Thompson the truth I think will never be known. I certainly remember the Buster Crabb affair, however the Jim Thompson affair never made it to the U.K. headlines at the time of his vanishing.

Two good potboilers or even movies perhaps.

Buster Crabb. Yes. I know that one. There have been some very strange stories about him over the years (!) The rubber fetish springs to mind.

Does this mean he's buried under the goal post in Giant Stadium?

Got me there, QA. Sorry, I'm a Brit, it's one of those occasions where I don't 'get it'.

(And nobody move that comma between 'sorry' and 'Brit' and think I won't notice.)

Sounds to me like he was, knowingly or unwittingly, stirring in somebody else's pot, and pissed off some local Malay or Thai 'businessman'.

Doesn't sound like his disappearance was political or CIA motivated, at that point in time.

    Know the type.

The tiger stuff is pure nonsense.

    Tigers don't eat the bones.

He had a car waiting. Drove into Penang airport and was transported out on a US military aircraft.

Spent that last twenty years of his life in Terre Haute....Living quietly in a hi-so cul-de-sac.

    That's my theory........
