Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
Good thread.
I never answer a phone while I'm teaching unless it's from a member of my family abroad (and that would be exceedingly rare). Everyone else (provided you are in my phone book) can wait until I've finished teaching, and if it's a number I don't recognize then you'll have to catch me at another time - because I ain't calling you back.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
I will excuse myself and leave if it's the bank or some such who I've been waiting to get back to me and don't want to have to call back and be on hold again for hours ... that's rare.
I definitely don't answer it to friends from back home who are usually calling at 3 or 4 a.m. their time to tell me how shitfaced they are and talk a load of shite!

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
Only if it is the Red phone And stock market related
Seriously I only answer the phone if it is she who must be obeyed, and that is very very rare.

My school is so poor that they don't have a desk for the foreign teacher, esp. one with a lock, so I have to carry my phone with me all the time.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?

seems silly...

Never, it's grossly unprofessional and rude, to boot..

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
Only if it's my boss. I keep the phone on vibrate. If it vibrates I quickly check and move on. My boss requires me to be available to take her calls at all times during school hours. She also requires all teachers to own a mobile phone and keep it on them.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
I've answered 2 calls in my life in the class. One to tellme I'd purchased a house and the other to tell me my dad had died. both were expected. I think as many have said unless a reall emergency its unprofessional. why any principal allows students to have phones in class is beyond me. it just typifies there low expectations of their school. all calls should go to the office.

Absolutely. It boggles the mind when you see M1 kids with phones and they all insist that their parents need to be able to call them in class. But the look of surprise and dismay when the thing is confiscated, switched off, and put in the teacher's desk makes it all worth while.
My 1% exceptions are basically people I know wouldn't call me except in an emergency; the two times I've stepped out to return a call both involved people in hospital. Even my boss can wait till I'm done, since he knows what I'm doing and why.

and the sms can wait too. we're at work. bring it to class but keep it on vibrate--you can discretely notice a call, and tell the time. if it's that important, they'll call back. if you see someone has called numerous times, excuse yourself and put out the fire.
phones in the classroom really piss me off.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
I answer because it could be my kids. If not its a 3 second call. "Call back I am teaching". But lately I have taken some international calls as I am planning my vacation.
Not setting a good example I know, but I do walk out and conclude the talk quick. As I have been using the new Hatari phone card which is 4 baht a minute to the UK or USA

Seriously,
Answering a phone in class should be a firing offense.
