Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
'Course I do! And I've got a loud, offensive ringtone to boot...
'Yeah, no probs. Nothing important. You? Later on? Probably Cowboy. Wicked. We'll get wrecked...'
I'm joking. No, I don't answer my phone. It stays in my desk while I'm teaching. I confiscate phones if they are used in my class. It's rude.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
Absolutely never
And I never tolerate it from my (young adult) students.
I do however make sure there is a break every hour for anyone to make or receive a call.
The chances of a serious incident happening to someone's child in that 55 minutes are very remote.
And people with kids managed for a fair while before the advent of mobile phones.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
I gotta be honest here, answering phones in class sets a bad example for a nation of kids which find it an acceptable thing to be doing. A ringing phone is always answered, even in the middle of a conversation/dinner/taking a dump. This, in my humble opinion, is because of the itch/scratch way of living here (have you ever tried to deny food to a Thai who feels peckish for example!).
Mum and Dad of little Lek, will find it totally acceptable to cut off whatever they are doing and answer the phone without any thought, this is the lesson that most Thai kids learn. This is just the way things are, the kids will know the rules about answering phones in class but will definitely not understand them! Us answering our phones does reinforce the acceptability of this.
If anyone has done business in UK then they know how offensive this kind of thing is to the British business world. I once saw a senior manager thrown out of a meeting by the MD for leaving his ringtone on (he didn't get a chance to answer the thing!). This is a cultural issue. Its totally acceptable here to answer phones in class and elsewhere because that is the cultural norm. However in UK its unacceptable.
I do think its or duty as teachers to lead by example and show WHY it is a rude thing to be doing (for us). Disturbing others, irritating, selfish etc.
I do totally get the whole kids scenario and have a deal of sympathy for it, however receiving a phone call probably isn't going to save a life, teaching responsibility and manners (from a western perspective) trumps it in my opinion.

Re: Do you answer the phone while in class?
I only answer if it is my wife, i just check if everything is ok, then tell her i am teaching and i'll call her back. she doesnt know my scheduele, and chances are that she woul call when i wasnt teaching seeing i only do it for a few hours a day. if i turned off my phone all day then turned it on to find something serious had happened that i may have been able to help with i would be quite pissed off. The mobile phone is a handy tool. sorry if people think its selfish but my wife and kid are much more important to me than the conversation i am having, or the deal i am tryin to land, or the lesson i am teaching. full stop!! ( i love that term)

I disagree that this is a cultural norm. Quite simply good schools here ban phones because they disturb others or have strict rules on their usage. shit schools who don't give a toss about kids education alloow these evil machines to be used freely whenever their felt like. Schools create their own culture. The this is Thailand excuse wears a bit thin. Phones in class are used as another toy for students to play with as the same old voice drones on.
