If you miss a call because a family member died they'll still be dead when you call back. Phone off during class or at least on silent. -Does the question really need asking?

Only carry my mobile in class in case she who must be obeyed calls, which has only happened once and it was an emergency. I switch it to beep once so I know a call or message has come in. I take a look when it's convenient and doesn't interrupt the flow of the lesson. I do not return the call during classtime except for the wife as mentioned before.

I lived for three years in a house without a phone. No mobile too. You find out who your real friends are doing that. They drop in to visit, the rest complain to you about your not having a phone but don't visit.

Thats nice. a few years ago my wifes mom died. my wife called me in hysterics, i answered the call, and took the call, and talked to her and cancelled the rest of my classes for the day. she was happy to have her husband there to get her through that 30 minutes of just finding out her mom died. i havent been through that yet, and when it does happen i hope i have someone to talk to.

I was being slightly facetious -however I still find it a weak justification for taking personal calls in class. Most, if not all, calls during teaching hours do not warrant taking -even if it's the wife. If I was a student and a teacher took calls during class I would treat them with the contempt they'd shown me. Pushing a MOSTLY hypothetical argument does not justify a wholesale policy change.

I think you are purposely misunderstanding the point.
There is no need to be abusive. I was merely giving my opinion on the OP's question. Justifying almost anything is easy when you push things to the extreme.

I'm not trying to be abusive, i just think that you are coming off as a dick and an idiot.
Its not the extreme, these things do happen. people die, peoples children get hurt, it happens. no need to justify it, bad things happen regardless if you have this piece of plastic with electronics in it or not. why not use it to help your loved ones or spouse/GF in their time of need. if that is taking it to the extreme, than we have different values i suppose.

can't you make your point without being insulting -it's easy on the net. Control yourself. I just don't believe that a ringing phone (99% of the time unimportant) is conducive to being effective in the classroom. I've taught in the UK, Ireland and here and it has never crossed my mind to leave on the phone during lessons -breaks and non-contact time, fine.

The phone should be turn off while teaching, meeting, in the movie theatre or restaurant.

I'd just gather my thoughts and wait. If I was in hysterics then past experience tells me that probably someone would be around to console me. People are mostly decent human beings - even if you don't now them that well.

The mobile phone inhibits this reality rather than enhances it.

We're just different, I guess.

i have yet again come to the rescue to put the issue at rest.

only in rare circumstances should a mobile be on during class (eg. wife 10 mths pregnant) otherwise they should ALWAYS be off.

wife etc should have school telephone number to contact you in emergency .. that's how it worked in the past, and that's how it should be today and tomorrow.

no. switch it off or put it on silent and look at it slyly when the students are doing an exercise.
