I think the OP is rather pessimistic about the costs of living here and the ability to live on wages here.
I earn a bit more than 35k, spend a lot less than the OP quoted, live comfortably, and save.
I have a car not a motorcycle.
But its true if I was paying a mortgage here I'd be struggling. However, as I think the rules are stacked against owning a property here, it's not worrying me.
Thai credit cards are a bad deal so I haven't got one. I pay cash and hold an Aussie Visa in reserve for emergencies.
It also depends where you live. Bangkok is also a lot more expensive than other places to rent or buy.
I don't know anyone who does monthly border runs. Get legal and its not an issue and a lot cheaper than being illegal.
Overall, I eat out more, buy more movies, have better cheaper clothes and am enjoying most things here more than I did back home. Yet I only earn a quarter here of what I did in Oz.
The payoff is, even with the usual work stresses, I'm less stressed at work here than I was back there. So it's horses for courses. This horse is quite happy on this course.

my wife, government teacher for 4 years, is making a little over 10000 BHT. Her salary goes up every 6 months, she can take loans whenever and wherever she wants, her government card opens almost every door. Of course she can take cheap loans for teachers, free healthcare and pension. When we add up all those things together farangs do not make much more than Thais. Look at all those cars at your schools.

Thai teachers are underpaid. No swag of cheap loans and benefits can make up for being denied the ready cash IMO.
I know a Thai going for a job at Mahidol which only pays 16k plus benefits. For her qualifications, experience and skills, its just not enough.
I see the govt is promising an extra chuink of money to pay Thai teachers money owed to them for years and not paid. Amounts to about 3500k a month I think. How cheap is that? Yet this govt has foreign reserves of $US55 billion baht. Cheapskates.

my wife, a thai teacher, makes 47,500 baht a month. gets all the benefits and is soon going to retire. the next time the early retirement scheme comes around. she'll stop work and get 23,000 baht a month for the rest of her life. as well as a 700,000 handshake.
i, in the meantime, will be working for i don't know how long, and when i stop, will be lucky to get a 200 baht fake rolex. been teaching now, over here for nearly ten years, and am still an alien. thaiteachers can move up the ladder and get very good money and security.

i am lucky to have a wife who earns pretty good dough. without it, and her, i would definitely have to leave pretty soon. i'm no spring chicken.
and as far as a mortgage is concerned. through the government housing/for teachers and other gov't employees. 1 milion baht for as little as 8,000 baht a month. less than the rent many teachers farang are paying. we are paying 20, and will own the house up here next month. 8 years in and almost own the mother!!!!!!!!

32 teachers at my old school earning what my wife gets.
they're not all on the low teens. starting yes.....7,200 a month, but there is a lot at the end.
am i the only teacher here who earns less than his wife???

the thais will continue to perpetuate the myth that we are treated fairly, so long as we continue to listen.

they have no consideration for our well-being in terms of financial matters, etc. many people make the mistake of projecting their own perspectives onto things; thai bosses are not charitable types and thais put themselves first always. the less they have to give us, the more for them - hence the lies.

we have to put an end to the myth that we are treated fairly. i was not born a third world citizen and i do not wish to trade places with my boss.
