More info
I now have two friends working in this project.
They both joined it together.
I am not sure if the next bit is true but it may well be.
Allegedly the teachers which were already hired in Nothaburi were fired and then re-hired at a higher salary.
I am suspicious of this one but I could well believe it.
Excuse me would you mind if we fired you then re-hired you at a higher rate of pay for ten months even though you have a full 12 month contract with the school.

That's very strange. Why didn't they just raise the salary?

I caught up with CrudeDirk and did a phone interview. The sound quality varies but I'm going to air the interview tomorrow on Thailand Today, 3pm, 9pm, 3am, 9am. He's my only source on this project. I just wanted to get in idea how it was going for him. Tune in if you can.

Most everyone is way off base with this issue.
I will ask the 'pedantic' American in charge if I can state his view.
And I thought ajarn.com was on top of the ESL scene in Thailand...

Sure. Or perhaps he could even state "his view" himself.

I will talk to the main guy this weekend. However, in his defense most of the native speakers that replied to the ad were, dismal to say the least. Rather embarrassing on my part as a fellow 'falang'. I was observing...
One should not show up with his rent-a-date and a KSR degree.
The Philos have the 'falangs' beat hand down.
Finally, let me say. This is the biggest ESL advancement in Thailand history and yet the slam-dunk of all teacher's sites in Thailand is behind the curve...
Agree or disagree, I am trying to help.
Wake da fok up...

The Nonthaburi project is not an advancement until after it has advanced. It started this week, right? How will its success be measured? What Thai statistician will compute the standard deviation?
It may be a success, in two more years. But from what's been posted on this thread, it sounds like a boondoggle headed for a train crash. It purports to pay up to 40K, a wage that's probably above average in Bangkok (certainly for non-native speakers). But there are catches, fine print, disclaimers up front. What's the curriculum? How's the management? What kind of long term visas did the Brits and Filipinos get? Do teachers get competent support on campus? How large are the class sizes? Air conditioning, old chalk boards, lousy portable speakers and $10 microphones? Poorly copied handouts and impossibly bad tests, to be reported in impossibly bad marking systems? Are they managed differently at each school? Who renews their work permits? Etc., etc.

I had an interesting conversation with one of my Thai bosses today. I'm at a private bilingual school. Apparently the private sector schools are a bit peeved about this project. Many of them have been denied licenses to expand into regional areas other than Krung Thep and a few major city areas. My school and several others I am acquainted with have reported losing up to 10 teachers each, mainly Phillipinos. They are of the opinion that the government is trying to one up them all.
They are also concerned that as the project gets larger they will have difficulty finding good qualified teachers for their schools. (Again mainly the Phillipino teachers) My boss is annoyed that the influx of staff from the private sector to the government schools also means that teaching materials and methods are being stolen by the government.
Personally I think this is not such a bad thing. The government schools could do with an influx of new ideas and methodologies.
The Nonthaburi project is the second stage of this project. I don't know a lot about the first stage but here's what I do know. In April there was a similar (trial?) course conducted at Chulalongkorn University. Most of the teachers were already working in the government schools. The graduates went back to their schools in and around Bangkok. Most of them were Phillipinos and other non-native speakers.
I lost one of my best Phillipino teachers (Excellent English, 10years experience) to this project. He was one of a few participants from outside the government schools. Can't blame the guy, he was on 16,000 here, now he's on 27,000. Ran into him yesterday, he reports that five teachers from the Ramkhamhaeng course have joined his school for second semester.
This one could be the winds of change a blowing. I'll be keeping my eyes on this one.

It just sounds like a sex tourists dream to me.
No degree no paperwork needed in you go no questions asked.
How many undesirables slipped through. Sex offenders will be having a ball.
How will the schools support the teachers next year with no funding?
