I am heartened by this government backed project to recruit more teachers outside the usual pool of applicants.
I am especially pleased that Filippinos will be sharing a larger part of the burden to teach Thais conversational English at school level.
For too long the myth has been that impossible to understand Brits and slang filled Americans are somehow the only ones that can teach English in Thailand.
This is not the case and anyone (especially Thais) who have had contact with English speaking Flippers will find them a delight to listen to and to comprehend.
They also carry other required trademarks of success which includes patience, adaptability and a keener devotion to the altruistic aspects of living in Thailand and working as a teacher of English.
Finally there are some real paying opportunities for dedicated teachers who don't fall about drunk, screw prostitutes and stink of cigarettes.

if all the government schools in Non have been filled with teachers from the government agency. What will happen to the other teachers that are still contracted to teach in those schools, eg ecc with contracts and teachers in those schools, and the rest? Will these big language companies lose all their government school contracts? This project if a success will spread througout the country.

NOt really El-Tel
More of a typical Thai situation where they suddenly go - Oh Shit we need 250 teachers SCRAMBLE"
How many undesirables got through with out a proper vetting process.
Most schools and agencies are small and get to examine the teachers closely.
250 teachers in one go though - would be very easy for people who had other reasons for being here to get through.

This program will work only until money lasts. It's the easiest thing to hire 250 assorted teachers if you pay way over the average wages for this kind of work, and hire flips.
And then there's the question of value - the quality, the standards, the expectations etc. There's absolutely nothing to suggest that with this hiring procedures and setup the expectations will be met.
I remember sometime around 2000 BMA schools had this kind of project and it lasted a couple of years before money dried out.

Having any kind of English speaking invasion is good for the Thais overall, whether the program, baht for baht, is worth it compared to some other program. I remember the first school I worked at, the staff's English speaking ability improved dramatically in just a few months of having three native speakers hanging around the office.

I'm guessing that the 'pedantic' American is a qualified and experienced EFL teacher who can see the utter futility and gross waste of money involved in employing a bunch of untrained people to teach English with no proper curriculum, no proper assesment of student needs, no targeted outcomes, and no proper resources.
This is just another of those 'magic bullet' schemes that someone talked about on a thread here a while ago. It will undoubtedly fail and fail at enormous cost. The result? "We tried putting native speaking teachers into all these classrooms and it didn't work. Let's just go back to what we were doing before'.
Of course the fact that - as a friend of mine once said about a teaching institution here - 'the problem is that none of them know what it's supposed to look like' - will be conveniently overlooked. Quite honestly, it makes me sick. It's up there with tiger on the menu at the zoo. It's a wonder that the people who scheme these things up can actually work out how to dress themselves in the morning.

Hillbilly mate, still waiting for an explanation from you or the American chappy involved as to why this is such a cutting edge, visionary scheme for education in Thailand.

Problem is mate I don't think many of these teachers are native speakers.

No, it ain't, just more of the usual pea-headed nonsense masquerading as an educational initiative.
