Are TEFL/CELTA teachers "real" teachers?
I ask because someone had a real dig at me for being only CELTA qualified and calling myself a teacher.
Do you class yourself as a "true" teacher? Why or why not? Or do you not care?
What makes a "real" teacher?
I am interested in your opinions.
Taz.

I say if you're teaching English, you're a teacher.
... but not a Professor.

i don't have a horse in this race, but is there a semantic difference between 'someone who teaches english' and 'an english teacher'?

In modern countries, teacher's credentials normally take a serious commitment of time and effort -- at least a year, and maybe two. So when someone takes an online course, or even a legitimate 6-week TEFL course in Thailand and becomes a "teacher," the formally credentialed teachers sneer a bit.

anybody can become a 'teacher' but there are good teachers and bad teachers. there is also a difference between a 'teacher' and a 'lecturer' or 'professor' since the jobs they do are a bit different.
a good teacher will continually try to update his knowledge and skills through further training and study: it is not sufficient to say 'oh i've got the tefl certificate now that's me done' - in this case you are a 'fast food salesman', you are not a 'restaurateur'. We are all of us at different phases of our 'careers' so not having a university degree is acceptable so long as the teacher intends getting one eventually. It is depends on who you are teaching because the guidelines are different in different countries: to teach in state schools in England you need a PGCE but over here you only need to finish M6 if you are a thai (is that right?)

Right on, Hentai. That's as I see it. Teaching really is the oldest profession--sorry ladies!--and it was around long before 20th century schools tried to professionalize it and slap a credential on every nervous teacher's ass. And thereby control it. Credentialism has just created and bullied us into believing that this new norm constitutes a real teacher's education, but it has nothing to do with what teaching or a true teacher really is.

do you need to study for a degree if you are only teaching 5 year olds? you do if you work in a school in the UK. the requirements are different in each country and in each sector of the industry. anyone who takes their job seriously is a teacher but qualifications are important since these courses are a form of training - teachers are in the business of qualifications after all.
imagine teaching people to drive if you yourself could drive but hadn't yet passed your test!!!
when all that's said and done, what did they do before there were universities though? well there has always been testing and evaluation of a students/teachers knowledge/progress so i don't see what the problem is.
what does the-ugly-one think?
