This courses have been around for a year now. Different unis offer such courses to make some money, however no one knows if you really need it. We got about 10 offers from different unis, with different prices (4,000 - 12,000 BHT). Our boss said that it's useless and wait until we are forced to do it.Originally Posted by Stamp
I have just been approached by a minion of our head of dept, with the same form we were showed in Nov last year about this teachers lic.
She asked me and my colleague whether we knew anything about this to which I replied, it does not apply to government schools, and anyway, I had heard that the idea had been scrapped. I also mentioned that I had heard of people sending the 500B off in the post, never to recieve anything back.
This confused the poor dear, and she scuttled off back to the head of dept, to report her finding... Now lets hope the HoD gets off her arse and does her job, calls the MoE and asks someone to investigate....
Time to bury head back into sand!

we have a new teacher start with us, when the school went to process her WP, she was told that she has to pay the 500 baht for the new TL (a government school) now I don't know if it was the MOL who insisted on it, just that the finance dept in our school said they had been told to send it off asap with all her docs.

From the link previously this is the website for the teacher's Council of Thailand.
It's all in Thai as far as I have looked through it.

We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.

OK, my wife has been hearing about new requirements for Farang teachers and called the KruSapa (Teacher's Council) and asked a few questions.
Here's what she was told:
1. The Teacher's Council is or will be issuing 5 year Teacher's Licences which will take the place of the 1 year licences that we are currently being issued.
2. Within 3 years all Farang teachers will have to get these licences. Her exact words were "In 3 years no more illegal teachers". In the interests of domestic harmony I didn't comment on this statement.
3. For teachers like myself, who qualify for the current license, but who don't have graduate level education credits or an overseas teaching license, the following will be required:
a. A 3 day Thai culture course that costs 4,000b. There are 5 schools in BKK that are approved by the TCT to offer this course: Ratchapat Jankesem, Ratchapat Dusit, Ratachpat Rangsit, Assumption College and Nanachat International University. Some schools are charging more for this course.
b. A series of 4 tests offered by the KruSapa on Thai Culture and Educational Techniques. These tests cost 1000b each.
4. These licences are not school specific, so a teacher won't have to reapply to the MOE every time he or she changes jobs, although they will have to inform the MOE where they are currently teaching.
When she asked about the 12K- 20K baht courses I have seen mentioned on this forum, she was told: "Some schools are charging more than they should for the course. Teachers should be smart enough to call us up to find out what the truth is. If they are stupid enough to trust their schools they may end up paying extra."However, the people at the Krusapa don't speak much English, so you should get a Thai friend to call for you!
Now, this info may be correct or incorrect. I may have totally misunderstood my wife, she may have misunderstood the fellow at the KruSapa, he may have been talking through his hat or the requirements may change next month! But, for what it's worth, this is what I was told.

I'd pay 1000 baht to learn about Thai educational techniques. how to never ask a question, speaking in a monotonous voice for hours on end and how to conveniently not see students blantanly copying on end of term exams. Educational techniques in Thailand, do me a favour.
A quick update/correction: The courses at the places I listed above are NOT all 4000b, they range in price from 4,000b to about 10,000b! The Ratchapats are the cheapest.
Qwerty, what happens in the case when the teacher does have overseas teaching qualifications (or the 15 credits in education)?
I've never heard the same thing said in 2 different schools - seems to me they make it up as they go along - thing to remember is you never at any time have to hand over passport/WP (even if they've paid for it)/academic certificates to the school - they're your documents despite all the bullshit to the contrary you've no doubt heard - I know this from having a go back at the buggers and from legal advice - don't give nobody nuthin' document-wise - you do not have to - if they keep it demand it - you don't have to work till it's in your hands, despite the bureaucratic bollox and likely threats
