Fortesque Smythe Brown is extremely happy here having lived here for many a year, would you belive it I am actually married to a lovely Thai lady and Ye Gods we have even bred childen too.

Yes I am English and bloody proud of it,we led the world and others followed don't knock our history or indeed others history.

All kingdoms, nations, republics glorify their history. The French republic had aspirations to imperial glory as well as the English and the Dutch and the Germans too.

The U.S.A. has not got the hang of imperialism yet but not for the want of trying though!!

Beware the Chinese, look at all the river dredging and railway construction in hand, the construction of super higways to quote ''facilitate international trade in S.E. Asia'' methinks some smelly fish and deceased rodents about regarding this particular strategy from China.

Did not Mr. Adolf Hitler enact such schemes under the guise of opening up Europe to German markets in the 1930's ?

Boy did those panzers and troops sweep through Europe with ease, certainly Mr Krupps and his companies benefited from the opening of the "trade routes"!!

We are all xnophobic and racist to some degree whether we care to admit it or not.

One thing I noticed when I lived there - walking down the street I never came across a woman who I thought 'I could really give her one' - they all looked (and dressed) like dogs.

A taxi driver last night told me that Thais prefer British or Australians, and that Americans are now viewed as "not the same" ("mai muen gan").

Black people are black people, but many Thais do understand that you can have black people who were raised in modern western countries.

Indians are universally hated for a reason I fail to recall (duh...)......

I really do think that the racism against eachother will peter out slowly as newer generations grow older.

Or maybe, as we are all hoping, (in vain) that one day they will just wake up and think about how f**king stupid it all is.

And the white skin thing too, but I doubt that very much as it is taught practically from birth.

I'm with you on that, Pat. Was in the store a couple of weeks ago, doing my weekly shopping when the lady love says, "Oh, I need some lotion, honey." We went to the 'lotion aisle' and I pointed out that I was NOT BUYING ANY OF THAT WHITENING SH**, and that she was beautiful as she was. It's something I tell her frequently (the beauty thing, not the whitening thing). I think maybe she's beginning to believe me.

Other countries that I've lived (Brasil and Cabo Verde, for instance) also displayed pretty open racism about their darker skinned countrymen. Considering that almost all Brasilians have some African ancestry and ALL Cabo Verdians (small island nation off the coast of Senegal) definitely do, I found it quite surprising.

I think that one of the problems that the OP (and many others have) is in understanding that, outside so called ‘western’ societies, racism exists and, to them, is perfectly natural and acceptable.

In the UK and US ‘racism’ (along with other ‘minorities’ issues) has become a growth industry and uttering opinions along racist grounds is seen as taboo or can even get you running foul of the law.

So coming from the UK or the US it probably is a shock to come up against open racism.

I know that when I visited Russia the racism there was unbelievable and, with so many races in their society, plenty of people to look down on or treat with suspicion.

I remember that the woman I was staying with on one occasion saying that another westerner she had met previously had said that she was racist, and couldn’t understand what he was on about. Even when I’d explained it to her she just shrugged and said ‘so what’ the (fill in the gap here) are drunks/smell/murder you in your beds/steal/….etc.

But, rather than condemning, try to understand the probable cause. Certainly, as far as Russia is concerned, it’s wrapped up in their history and even many of the Russian classics will have racist comments and undertones.

As far as Thais are concerned, I don’t believe they’re any worse than any other non-western society.

The only advice I can give is live with it. If you can’t, then don’t stay – you’re not going to get them to throw out centuries of traditional thinking.

The issue with the skin color is like this-white skin means you rarely go out in the sun meaning you're always inside doing something comfortable, meaning you're rich. Therefore, white skin is better than dark in that sense, to Thai people.

It's not just skin color that is looked down upon, it's also facial features. For example, flat noses, big jaws are looked down upon because they represent people from Esarn, which are regarded as poor.

Generally, Thai people like the chinese look, that is Chinese eyes, white Japanese flawless skin, and egg-shaped faces.

DJ Pat, good comment. It's acid that does the whitening. Some women have had averse reactions, like their skin burning to the next layer and they ended up with scars all over their faces. That's attractive. Why don't they believe in SPF For f*ck's sakes!!!! It BLOCKS THE SUN'S RAYS!!!! You can get SPF 50 etc etc. It doesn't take a genius.
