That's the comment I've been scrolling for. Easy to understand ain't it? If a one-year-old kid sees no difference in another kid of a different race, then what else could it be than learnt?

Monkeys are born with a fear of snakes, so was I . IMO appart from grippiing and sucking it's all learned behavior.

Yup.

Baffling as to why you hear Farangs aplogising for this kind of phenomenon.

If we can be more rational and change ourselves, that is, make genuine efforts to minimize or escape racism, then we can begin to change the culture. Such change is being pursued and fostered increasingly, espcially after the mass slaughters of the 20th century.

Ideological racism, especially, continues to exist to be sure. But it's increasingly being viewed negatively.

Now, if Thais only knew that...
That's good and pretty much common knowledge. Gossip is one of the means by which we define good and bad, right and wrong. And people with nothing to do, like Thais, need something to convey when all the price-of-rice complaints fade. Let's see, what else bothers me ... those fuckin farang!

Then there's the newsboy-kicks-the-dog syndrome. Take Mexico: Those of "pure" Spanish blood look down on the Mestizos (mixed). Of course the mixed gossip about the indigionous.
You would think they, the poorest of the nation, wouldn't have a dog to kick, but they do .. the Guatemalans. See, when you're the lowest you have to cross borders to find your dog.

Re: Are Thai taught to be racist people.

I am an African American and I have lived and worked in Thailand (Udon Thani) for nearly two years. I am familiar with the Bangkok scene as well.

What I have observed is that Thais are "prejudice" not racist; there is a difference.

If one carefully listens to a Thai, it is easy to ascertain the source of the prejudice: it is from the many Farang who come into the country. They bring with them their racist and bigoted views and teach them (wittingly or unwittingly) to the Thai people. Many Thais adopt these views. In general, many Whites all over the world view Black folk as unintelligent, incapable of leading, teaching, dirty, dishonest, prone to violence, and not to be taken seriously. Too, this is the way we are portrayed on TV and the mass media.

I also observed that Thais (especially Thai women) have a "preference" for white or light skin; it does not matter your ethnicity. This preference is seen among their own. Dark skinned Thais are discriminated against and viewed differently. It is very common to see Thai women avoid the direct sunlight for fear of getting a tan. Skin-whitener products are popular in Thailand. It is rare to see advertisements of dark-skinned Thais on billboards and Thai magazines. You will never see a dark-skinned person from any race on a billboard. YOU DO see Thai models so white that they look like white people; they don't look like a natural Thai anymore. You WILL see white American and European models on billboards; never a Black model.

While this might sound complex to many, this is the same white supremacist attitudes that is still prevalent in America and Europe. These have simply migrated to places like Thailand.

I actually had an australian White guy boldly question me (in front of his Thai girlfriend), why I was in Thailand. He spoke to me as if it was his country and I was taking his women or something. He was rude and walked away with his Thai girlfriend in tow laughing. That is the lesson he taught her.

Yet, I have seen many Farang mistreat Thai women and treat them like "sexual" property. Thailand has become their "playground" and they do not want anyone in their "sandbox."

I met several Thai ladies who were genuinely attracted to me because they perceived me as "different" from the stereotype.

Yet, my Thai staff were very respectful to me. In time, they learned that I was different. That I did not fit the "stereotype" they were taught. I have conducted myself as a gentlemen and always polite.

There are other deep rooted factors that would explain some of the prejudice, but Thais (and other Asians) know that this is a "White mans" world; he holds the money, the influence, and the power. I also know that many Thais despise Whites, but not their money. It is a game.

The one thing that bothers me is that some Thais are ashamed of their natural color. That is how God made them. What would their ancestors of old think of this "white-skin" worship. Be proud of who you are.
