Are Thai taught to be racist people.

I have been working here in Thailand for a good 2 years now. But the one thing that bothers me about Thailand. I mean, they are taught to be compassionate, caring and a tolerant society.

Teaching in the classrooms here, especially at the high school level. Thai students constantly do grade or ridicule people from Laos. When asked if they have been there or know anyone there, they say no.
After watching the news on TV and reading the Bangkok Post. I have come to the understanding that most Thai people follow the example of their newly appointed leaders, that all Muslims are Terrorists and bad, and basically cannot stand any Muslims southern or out here in Minburi at any cost and will blame them for most of Thailand problems.

A friend of mine works for a private language school here. They are just starting up and of course want to pursue the “gold mine” of business. Human resources management.
The owner states, that she does not like:
  • Anyone from the Philippines, (not able to teach because they are dark, and cannot speak English).
  • Nigerians.
  • Muslims (Thai do not like them to teach their children),
  • Gays (They are child sex perverts and cannot be trusted).

After making her statement, I asked why. She said that they do not make good teachers for Thailand society and will not even hire them to work for her. I asked her if her view is shared by all Thailand people. She said yes.

Re: Are Thai taught to be raciest people.

I don't even understand the title.

Oh, and welcome to a third world country.

What some Thais say, take with a pinch of salt. Understand that you have probably had a much better upbringing, one that had TV stations that ventured out of your country from time to time.

Otherwise, enjoy what Thailand is all about... never fully understanding anything, especially the MOE!!!

Re: Are Thai taught to be raciest people.

Do ya want an inconvenient truth? Thais hate laotians. Thais dislike black people. Thais think farangs are farangs. And Thais hate Indians. There, that's the truth. Thais love Thai people.

In fact one of Thai insult words is "lao". It can be very offensive to Thai people if they get called "lao".

Re: Are Thai taught to be raciest people.

So, are Thais prejudice? Yes, very. Do they hurt other races violently like in America? No, they don't. Would they be racist verbally? Well, they wouldn't say anything about your race, except if they see you, they might say to their friends "lao" or "farang" or "negro". Generally, Thais are very compassionate.

Pure racism can only be taught. It's been researched and proven and documented.

Aren't all countries racist to a degree? For example the English with the Welsh and Americans with Canadians. It's all the same.

But I'm a little prejudice toward people from Nigeria, as well-after getting so many scam emails from that country.

"Dear sir,

My name is...I have $4045845848485...I am dying...I need you to...."

Good point. I'm prejudice a little bit and I'm sure tons of people are (if not all), but we can't say it, can we? It's just that it's common for Thai people to say it out loud.

I'd look at this way, this is a great opportunity for us to say what we really feel out loud. I mean think about it, you hate them but you can't say it, I don't know which one is worse:

1. Hate them, but fake like you don't hate them.
2. Hate them, and show them that you hate them.

Ah, the southern Thai muslim issue. They do. In the media, and if you talk to most thai, they don't trust or like Thai muslim, not even the ones who live out near Minburi. It's called government sponsored hate.
