this sounds right on, shame so many others in thailand dont appear to share your sentiments!

Re: I've Wondered What'd Happen If You Didn't Stand Up
standing is cool. when you want to.
but when you dont want to stand, you still need to respect thailand? where is the connection there? because standing is respecting thailand
if one said, "well standing is SHOWING repect for thailand"...id love to a convincing argument supporting why this is a demonstration of respect. a demonstration of obedience, ok, i'd understand that. but a 'demonstration of respect' needs to be explained.
like politicians back home, for the last 7 years...wearing an american pin, or a 9/11 ribbon meant being patriotic. because if you dont wear it, you wont be patriotic. ohh..and the wildly popular ribbon "support our troops" bumper sticker, seen on 70% of cars where im from. because if you dont have one, you dont support the troops. "hey man, respect the troops and their courageous sacrifice. what are you aganst the troops?"

Re: I've Wondered What'd Happen If You Didn't Stand Up
^ hey on that note, similar thing in Australia - the finals football games always have the national anthem before the teams play and the entire crowd is expected to stand - i find it off!

It's the same in the US, the National Anthem is played, and everyone is expected to stand, before any sporting event.

Re: I've Wondered What'd Happen If You Didn't Stand Up
most things that create black/white distinctions like:
if you dont stand, you dont respect thailand
things like this have got very little merits. they are inherently valueless because they need the obedience of others in order to justify their existence. if people didnt stand, do you think youd see lawlessness on the streets? (which the lawlessness/chaos would be disrespectul in my book)
no, people would get along just fine and thai culture wouldnt budge. its a way to create IN and OUT groups by making the situation a duality: "if you dont stand, you are showing disrespect"
"youre either on our side or not" is hardly firm intellectual ground to stand on.

and if you dont stand there, you wont get the "wild card" reaction you may get here.
i stand here, everytime, but its out of "wow this is neat" and a fear of what would happen if i didnt.
back home, no way. you may hear a comment/whispering over your shoulder but thats it. not same same thailand. same same mentality. no same same reaction

I wouldn't stand for the Australian national anthem either!! Went to a league test in Auckland a couple of years ago. Got seated alongside an Aussie tour party...they all stood and looked serious when Advance Australia Fairy played and I sat through the whole lot....geez I got some looks...no sense of humour.
