Yea there's a great quote. Not sure who said it.

I understand where you're coming from but that's just the way the cultural differences are. It's reasonable in the context of being / living here.

Re: I've Wondered What'd Happen If You Didn't Stand Up
As a child I went to a catholic school. On a daily basis I was forced to recite prayers about a God I didn't beleive in. Fortunately when I was 16 I was able to leave religion in all forms behind and continue my life's path as a pure heathen. I feel generally sorry for any Thai who does not totally embrace the current regime or notions of nationalism. Unlike me they will still be expected to perform a daiy ritual that they find abhorrent because in this "democracy" the powers that be have really got you by the balls. fair play to the thais who didnt want to be drones and remained seated at the cinema. The fact that a normally placid race can become violent regarding this subject just shows how deep the brain washing in LOS actually runs.

Re: I've Wondered What'd Happen If You Didn't Stand Up
I have no problem standing for the national anthem because I think Bhumibol Adulayadej has done a lot of very good things in his life and has fully earned my respect and that of the majority of Thais. That's reason enough for me.
The current incumbent of the throne is a very good man in my eyes and if there is an opportunity for me to show some of my respect then I will do it. Not because I am under pressure to do so but because I want to.
As a royalist, I would usually sing along with the British Naional anthem too, if the circumstances were appropriate.

Arthur Dent watches as the clouds scud away in the lorry's wake. The rain ceases, allowing Arthur to dry off.
All Rob McKenna knows is that he can't remember his last sunny holiday. All the clouds know is that they love him, they want to be near him, to cherish him, to nurture him and to WATER him. For Rob McKenna is, in fact, a Rain God.

Seems an unusual reaction to me, probably because he's a known "activist".
I've seen Thai people not stand for the anthem before without provoking any major disturbance.

Didn't mean it that way mate, not trying to trump anyone, that's really not my style. I just enjoy the discussion.
I think being required / expected to get the door does take a bit away from the respect that the act is intended to convey. I grew up in the South (Florida) where this behavior was expected. When I moved to the West coast, where it's not the norm, whenever I did it it was recognized as a genuine demonstration of respect (or as an attempt to get in the girl's pants) and appreciated (or not).
