Thanks, LLL - I'd never seen it written before. Should've realised that it couldn't be spelt with a raw reua

So a correct transliteration of it would in fact be "laeng" rather than "raeng", right?

Re: The Pak Tai Dialect Game

Thanks Boonmee about keuak, didn't know the BKK crowd uses that as well.

Here a few more :

Central Thai : doo - watch/look - มอง/ดู
Southern Thai : lae - watch/look - แล

Central Thai : kee-nee-yaw - stingy-ขี้เหนียว
Southern Thai : khem - stingy - เค็ม

BTW, เด็กเทพน่าเอามากๆ แต่ว่าเด็กใต้ก็หรอยด้วย - the ones who can read it will know what I mean .

Re: The Pak Tai Dialect Game

I'm presuming that the word for "grasshopper" is the same in Southern as Central Thai...

ตั๊กแตน dtakadtaen

Nana & likewise: good stuff! This is proving to be a very informative thread.

Another useful one:

Central: farang ฝรั่ง

Southern: rang/lang หรัง

Re: The Pak Tai Dialect Game

^ Just to clarify mate, I take it that by 'farang' you mean caucasian? The fruit guava also has a different word in Southern ย่าหมู. Grasshopper is spelt the same in Southern and Central but the Southern pronunciation cuts out the vowell sound so, using your transliteration, it is more like 'dtakdtaen.'

How about the word for panic?

Likewise, nice to meet you too. It's okay. I don't want to get too involved in this game as it's not fair. I only look into it sometimes to correct things.

Cool Nana, I'm sure I get some of the words wrong when I write them, reading actually comes easier then writing.
