Re: The Pak Tai Dialect Game

A centralised version of the Thai langauge was the brainchild on one Phibun Songram, the well known military dictator of yesteryear. This was part of his push to establish 'Thai Indentity' and foster nationalism in the LoS. he openly admired Nazi Germany and Japan at the time. However, according to research done by I think, Graham Smiley, there is no such thing. Most people in Thailand speak either the Isaan or Southern dialect. Anyway, Songkram also issued an edict that to become more civilised, wives should kiss their husbands goodbye as they sauntered off to work in the morning! I think that was in the 1930's!

Liar is keyhok.

In keeping with Johnh's quite accurate description of old Plaek the next word is:

Not the same thing at all!

Compare: คนใต้ Khon Dtai (falling tone and short "ai") Southern people

คนตาย Khon Dtaai (mid tone and long "aai") Dead people

Both have the same meaning in Southern and Central Thai, though with different accents.

And Grasshopper: pineapple = ยะนัด ya-nad

Re: The Pak Tai Dialect Game

Actually Grassy, bet is correct ไม่พรือ is no worries.

Propaganda is not a word that crops up in conversation so often so I believe that the Central word โฆษณาชวนเชื่อ is used.

As for cockroach it's simple as many central people use this word as well แมงสาป as opposed to แมลมงสาป.

Re: The Pak Tai Dialect Game

Yes, indeed - enjoy!

BTW: they use "keuak" in Central Thai slang, too, but with a different accent.

"Bangkokians" = เด็กเทพ dek thep

an admirer = โมเด็ก modek

...Also worth pointing out the fact that many Southerners pronounce ง (ngaw ngoo) as a "h". Weird.
