Neither does Fellows when he ends his book with nothing but despair and frustration.

Nope. I'm pretty sure they'd throw the book at you ...both literally and figuratively.

If you were interested in Restless Souls, there's another great book (well better than Souls) called the The Lost Executioner by Nic Dunlap. It's not about Thailand but tells the author's story about finding the man who ran Tol Sang prison (SG-21) in Phenom Phen durring the days of the Khemer Rouge.

Also of SE Asia interest is Finding George Orwell in Burma by Emma Larkin. What a great read if you're interested in either Burma or the man.

Re: Good books about Thailand

I like all the books about Thailand. They all give their own angles from the naive drug smuggler, to the bar girl books. Tales from Phuket ws quite good as well. I still think there are no hard luck stories here.
i go for nthe informally written books that are easy to read rather than someone who uses the old flowery language yet by chapter 4 has ended up with his pants down beiong arrested for the usual naive mistake.

Canterbury Tales Cafe & Bookshop Pattaya has a lot of Thai related books such as Private Dancer by Stephen Leather, he even comes in and signes them, it is the most popular Thai related book.

Sorry I took so long to provide an educated answer to at leat some of these. I must say, Miss Pukhetbound, you did not let me down. My Amazon order arrived about 3 weeks ago and by now I have made my way through Traveller's Tales (never thought anything could make even more eager to get to know Siam) and Little Angels (a moving recollection which has set me more than once in the verge of tears by the middle of chapter 5), so please let me green you for all I may be worth, aside from our pending meeting (if timing works ok I expect to be around LOS, Laos, again LOS, Kampuchea and Vietnam from mid January to April, please by all means let me know if you are gonna be around. Mmmm chilled chardonnay... ;o) ). Btw, your Black Cat avatar looks even sexier than the previous one if such a thing may be possible).
As for the rest, guys, pls give me time to explore other mentioned suggestions (or make use of available surgery facilities in the country to turn as sexy as PB) and I will fill you in on my literate impressions ASAP. To all, read and unread, thanks a lot.

I have in fact been so abducted with mentioned readings that I have hardly realised all that's going on in the kingdom lately, I willl have to check out. Best regards, all.

Couldn't agree more. Why someone who already lives here would find anything insightful about Leather's hackneyed load of bollocks (Private Dancer) is quite beyond me.
