GERMAN ENGINEER FOUND DROWNED IN BANG SARAY SWAMP
A German, ex-pat engineer was found by local fishermen in the afternoon of June 4, 2008, floating dead in a Bang Saray swamp. From the fact that a waterproof can containing his photo and address was around the dead man‘s neck, police assume that this was a case of suicide.
Sattahip police officer, Rungsuk Sookjarean, received notification of the find at 2.30 pm on June 4 from a local fisherman who had gone to fish at Khoboumpenboon swamp, Moo.3 Bang Saray. A police investigation team was sent accordingly, and found the dead body of the German national, identified as Wilhelm Bergen, 67, an engineer, wearing a black t-shirt, black trousers and black shoes. A waterproof can with the deceased's address and name was attached to his neck and there was a bottle of liquor abandoned, nearby. The deceased was unharmed; there was apparently no missing money or valuables and there were no signs of a struggle.
Police later asked Mr. Wilhelm's wife, Ms Walee when she had last seen him alive and she told them that he had gone out the previous evening, June3, at about 6.00 pm. carrying a liquor bottle, telling her that he was just going to a restaurant in the Bang Saray area not too far away. He didn't return the previous night and she said the first she knew about his drowning was when the police themselves told her.
Police are currently unable to give a definitive cause of death, but assume from the lack of injury, the fact that none of his money was stolen and the ID in the waterproof can that this case may be suicide. The body will be sent for checks at a forensic laboratory. The German Embassy has been informed of Mr Wilhelm's death.
