    excellent point.

said it before, will say it again...lotsa honkies in thailand get the big fish in small pond syndrome.

love raking up every failing in thee country, consider themselves having all the answers...but it's easy. like shooting birds in an aviary.

look a little closer to home. to a society that's infinitely more corrupt (institutionalised y'see...), intrusive, destructive and restrictive. fight that and i'll be impressed.

Not fully (though it's really sunny here, so I'm having to squint a bit).
Is corruption not institutionalised here in Thailand?

Can you give some examples of British corruption?

people are people and are on the make everywhere...yeah, plenty of corruption in the UK, but higher up and less in yer face perhaps...Private Eye has a column in every issue called 'Rotten Boroughs' which exposes corrupt council officials - land deals, construction, contracting out services, etc - ordinary people dealing with officials or even simple employees will notice it more in Thailand than in UK, I would argue. Have you ever been asked for under the table money by a UK cop? Asked for money under the table so they'll sign up your marriage licence? Been the only passenger on a rural bus and the driver stops short in the middle of nowhere at night and refuses to continue until you pay him 200 Baht above the fare? Just a couple of anecdotes from moi

    Never
Asked for money under the table so they'll sign up your marriage licence?
    Never

You reminded me of the fact we can't see that the entire World is changing for the worse. What we do see is how Thailand is changing. We like to blame it on Thailand because we're here, not at home. Read all the news you desire but it's not the same as being there. Go home and complain to your mates how unfair Thailand has become and they'll one-up you on every comment with more than one horror story from the country you're now standing in. I think it was S&O who alluded to this as well.

youd rekon british police are just as corrupt as thai police? or that the law in general, is flaunted more in britian on a regular, systemic basis?

i can tell you how many times ive had to put 100 or 500 baht in a cops hand here:

2+ years in thai = more than 5 times
    america 31 years = 0 times

although fined in the states, ive never had the joy of being intimidated into paying a bribe.

and yes, bribery happens back home. just not so often and ^ as said above, just not so ordinary.

    shhhhhh!

It's a tradition in Mexico and probably just about all of Latin America as well. This is how it happened: Governing bodies of officials were sent to rural places to set up and enforce law and order proclamations. They had no salary. Theirs was to nickel and dime the citizens to cover their wages. The system stuck. I bet Thais got there the same way. In the US law enforcement is a career with lots of bennies. A guy won't risk a $100,000 job for a $50 bribe, except NYC, the best law enforcement agency money can buy.

OHH, no corruption in the western law enforcement and politics then . They just made it legal that's all.

In the West we have it big time but in Thailand they have it big time just as much as we do and also in yer face small time which we don't have all that much

Re: Draconian new internet data law

i agree with your point, fundamentally jon.

i'd argue though that the type of naughtiness that goes in the higher echelons of politics and business in the west has much wider and more profound effects than that of thailand.

thaksin's missus uses her connections to buy a few houses, no great shakes...shady arms deals conducted with the complicity of the uk and saudi arabian governments, that are so shady that courts agree us little folk aren't allowed to know about them...i think that has much more meaningful significance.

but of course it's a subjective call. but i'll stand by mine.

Re: Draconian new internet data law

The law is draconian, but I suspect that its implementation will be done in typical Thai style.... the same way as the 90-day immigration rule.....The staff at immigration have to look through your passport and add up the days... and if you change your passport, the system breaks down, so you can simply by-pass that law by changing your passport every 90 days! It would get a tad expensive if you're British though!

That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles. That we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door. That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe or hiring somebody's son. That we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will be counted -- or at least, most of the time. --Barack Obama, 2004 Democratic Convention

    1. Thailand is home for the posters here (until Sunday for me).

    2. The sub-forum is entitled "Thailand News Clippings". Hence putting the story in the relevant part of the forum and expecting it to be discussed in the context of Thailand and what those who live here, or have lived here, make of it, should they find it fascinatingly exciting or excruciatingly boring or just to be utterly indifferent. However it relates to Thailand.

    3. I use internet shops in Thailand very, very frequently. If it means I have to present ID in future and what I search will be tracked for libelous or pornographic content, it will impact on my life significantly.

How the devil is this story somehow insignificant? And how is the way it can be compared to laws in Italy or the restriction of freedom of speech in the UK relevant to me as an internet shop customer in Thailand?

    Sheesh!
