Kasama: Educating parents the key
Barack Obama's education policies have inspired the Education Ministry to change its own policies in the early childhood sector.
Changes inspired by the US president-elect's platform will be introduced as guidelines in national education development for the 2009 academic year.
The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) secretary-general Kasama Voravarn na Ayutthaya said Mr Obama's education policy matched Obec's plan to prepare pre-schoolers for entering kindergarten.
She urged directors of education zones to study Mr Obama's "Zero to Five" policy from his website and adopt it as a development guideline.
"Mr Obama's policy focuses on educating parents on how to properly raise their children. This is what we are still missing," she said.
Khunying Kasama said Obec wants to see all schools and education zones follow the policy, particularly with regards to educating parents on how to prevent their children from getting addicted to online games, and lapsing into bad behaviour.
A parents' group should be set up in each education zone to develop education standards, she said.
Meanwhile, the commission has set aside 426 million baht to buy personal computers for 1,290 small schools nationwide and another 33 million baht to buy 5,000 laptop computers for 100 schools next year under the "One Laptop Per Child" pilot project.
If the project proves to be successful, the commission would ask for more money to buy another 490,000 laptop computers for students in 2010 and 510,000 more laptop computers in 2011, she said.
Education Minister Srimuang Charoensiri said he wanted Obec, which received two-thirds of the ministry's budget this fiscal year, to use the money more prudently.
Part of the commission's budget should go into solving the shortage of teachers, particularly at remote schools, the minister said.
