    Dozens Die in Bangkok Nightclub

At least 53 people have been killed in a fire in a nightclub in the Thai capital, Bangkok, police say.
More than 100 others were injured in the blaze, which broke out as people celebrated the New Year, police told Reuters news agency.
A Thai police official told Reuters the cause had not yet been determined.
A witness told the BBC that he had seen a number of bodies being carried away from the club, named as the Santika, located in central Bangkok.
The witness, Andrew Jones, said survivors leaving the club told him the fire broke out on the stage after fireworks were lit just after midnight.
He said the club was popular with foreigners and locals alike.
The club had only one main exit, at the front, and many people had been trapped inside, he said.

This has just popped up on the bbc about 20 minutes ago. I was thinking that I must have the worst luck in Bangkok tonight until I saw this story. I have been poisoned.

Santika is in the Ekkami area of Sukhumvit, I hope no-one among our number are affected by this.
    Do you have coke?

I've seen many nightclubs in Thailand wth the same. No fire exits.
We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.

RCA aside, that seems to be standard for almost all of the clubs I've visited in Bangkok. I saw a couple of fire engines speeding down the road on my way back to my apartment. I really hope the same thing hasn't happened in another club.

I live near Suk 101 and saw a LOT of cop cars flying past my place. I was out on the balcony watching the fireworks and decided to stay out for a while and saw a lot of cop cars etc going past mine. I thought something was up, its damn sad.
Daniel Bedingfield claimed that his new album is what it would sound like if Sting, Stevie Wonder and Micheal Jackson were in a basement together - I haven't got the album so I'll have to imagine the sound of a blind bloke and a Geordie kicking the shit out of a pedophile.

Didn't see a dead body, unless you mean the girl suffering smoke inhalation being taken away by ambulance officers.

No need to belabor distraction on a thread like this but your complaining about a video of the event being posted and then turning around going on about your stupid computer problems and writing 'lol' on here seems a bit off...

Anyway, I'm really hoping that one of my former students, who works at Santika, was not harmed.

Sorry mate, I am pretty close to throwing my laptop against the wall with rage so I have to try and dispel that with humor for myself. I've got a really short temper with computers which is why I never lasted in the job I trained as lol.

And shit, anyone that knows me n matt I rarely say he's right

    Bangkok Club Fire

I haven't seen a thread in the news clipping yet. Sorry if I missed it.

So here, unfortunately, is the Bangkok Club fire thread. At least 59 dead, and over 100 injured. I expect these numbers to go up.

Dozens die in New Year's club fire in Bangkok

Death toll is at least 59, including some foreigners; around 130 hurt

    Sakchai Lalit / AP
Bangkok Fire and rescue officials remove a victim Thursday after a night club fire in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Dec. 31, 2008

BANGKOK - A fire swept through a high-class nightclub jammed with several hundred New Year's revelers early Thursday, killing at least 59 people and injuring about 130, officials said.

A number of foreigners were among the casualties from the blaze that erupted shortly after midnight at the Santika Club in an entertainment district of Bangkok.

Victims died from burns, smoke inhalation and injuries during the stampede to escape from the club, which had only one door for the public, police Maj. Gen. Chokchai Deeprasertwit said. Firefighters said a door at the rear was known only to the staff, while an Associated Press reporter saw a third door at one side of the building.

    Bodies in the morgue
Police Gen. Jongrak Jutanont put the death toll at 59, which included an undetermined number of foreigners. He said that among the injured were nationals of Australia, Nepal, Japan and the Netherlands.

    Firecrackers to blame?
Chokchai said that the fire may have been caused by firecrackers brought into the Santika Club by guests or sparks flying from a New Year's countdown display on the nightclub stage.

    Lack of exits
The emergency workers said the rescue operation was delayed because of heavy New Year's traffic in the Ekamai entertainment district and the large number of cars parked at the club.
