PM not guilty to work with Newin: EC

The Election Commission (EC) ruled that Prime Minister and Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva did not breach the 2007 Constitution after the opposition Puea Thai party accused him of forming the coalition with the help of banned politician Newin Chidchob.


EC secretary-general Sutthipol Thaweechaikarn said on Thursday that the government's involvement with former Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party executive Newin did not violate Articles 94, 96 and 98 of the Political Party Act, and the commission resolved to close the case.


Mr Sutthipol said the EC also inspected the financial donations given to the Democrat party in 2005 after it was accused of receiving 250 million baht from TPI Polene Public Company Limited, founded by ex-Matchimathipataya party leader Prachai Leophairatana.

The secretary-general said Mr Prachai's name was not in the list of donors, adding that the Democrat party received a total of 49 financial donations worth 38 million baht four years ago.
