Media rapped for grisly photos

Representatives of lecturers and students from six universities on Friday asked the print media to be socially more responsible and stop presenting pictures of grisly and violent scenes that can put the public off.
The call was made by representatives of Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Huachiew Chalermprakiet, Rattana Bundit, Eastern Asia, and Kasem Bundit universities.
Yubol Benjarongkij, dean of Chulalongkorn's communication arts faculty, said Friday at a media forum that since the beginning of the year there have been many newspapers, including the market leaders, which have frequently published photographs whose subject matter included badly burnt victims of the Santika pub fire, bloody crime scenes, dead bodies of accident victims, and the latest, the head of a foreigner dangling from the Rama VIII bridge.
In Thai culture, prior permission from the relatives of the dead is considered necessary, as it is another way of showing respect to the dead.
She said since newspapers were media for all ages, not only for adults, pictures could be worth a thousand words. Too much exposure to such pictures could induce children to imitate violent behaviour, thinking that those crimes and violent scenes were just normal behaviour.
Udomsak Yoothanaraweesak, a professor at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University, said that more importantly such pictures also reflect the standard of newspapers.
He said in the case of a girl who was raped, some newspapers did not publish her picture but named her parents, school and home address, which made it obvious who the victim was without intention. This made the girl nearly die of embarrassment.
Newspapers as well as other media outlets need to lift their standards and put journalistic ethics before profits, he said.
What?...and put one of the largest circulation newpapers out of business![]()
As long as the victims didn't have a ciggie on the go, or a beer in hand when they died.
I'm surprised the Thai media don't go all the way and push the concept of product placement even further than it is now. Maybe 'Nescafe' and 'Mama' merchandise could be put on the bodies when the cameras turns up.
Media are scum all over the world. The British took close up pictures of kids suffocating on the terraces of Hillsborough and then also made up stories that the surviving fans robbed the dead.
'Can I just shock you? I like wine'
Nice to see well known Thai institutions having a go though.
Sur votre bicyclette, mate.
Bullshit, the Fire Department came to my kids school and lectured on the tragedy of the Santika fire. Then they showed all the gory photos. Then they placed buckets and cans around the school yard. Filled them full of petrol an diesel, set them ablaze and had the kids all 12 and under come and use varying sizes of fire extinguishers.
Nutso.
Too long in Exile, too long not singing my song.

Too long in Exile, baby you just arent my friend.
Too long in Exile my friend, Baby you can never go home again.
ok, so nearly dying of embarrassment is possibly taking it too far, but let's face it, it's not nice, is it? And it shouldn't happen.
At least one group is raising the issue for public debate.
Maybe it will eventually bring about better legislation governing media photos and video.
We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.
about fooking time someone spoke up about that.
Sometimes my mind wanders, sometimes it leaves completely
