I agree , this quote of Cyrilles can be applied to all the scamming, corruption , crime etc.
Hence the kneejerk reaction over the jetski fiasco on t.v.
Thais wanted the film makers locked up, cos it tells the world how Thailand can be.
People, don't shoot the messenger, get your house in order.
My next door neighbours have challenged me to a water fight , so I am just writing this while I am waiting for the kettle to boil .
That's the most sensible advice that could be followed - now I know we worked together and probably shared a few pints
I think that the culture is actually designed for that
I think the Thai re-action to the British video on the British girl busted and extorted by the boys in brown on Koh Phang Nang is a case in point to support your view. All very sad and just makes Thailand look worse and worse as a tourist destination

Most overrated dump in Thailand Koh Samui. Totally destroyed by mankind's greed.
Yes, a terrible shame.
Along with Koh Pangan it was a nice spot 20 years ago.
Then came the airport and it seems like its been downhill ever since.
But what amazes me is that there are still some people, like a colleague of mine, who talk it about like it's a modern day Shangrila.
Same with Koh Pi Pi - reliable sources tell me it's an utter dump, yet people flock to it every year.![]()

It's very common for Thai women to get raped in Bangkok and elsewhere and its extremely underreported...it can be a dangerous place for women, my ex carried a taser with her wherever she went (disguised as a torch so she even took it aboard aircraft) and she had her Dad's registered .38 in her bedside cabinet just incase. Which was worrying for me and exciting in equal measure...ok too much information![]()

I admit to feeling less safe here the longer I stay
But then 90% of statistics are made up on the spot.

I just came from Seoul and it is the same there. One women came forward about being raped in Seoul and then all of a sudden many other women came forward. Seoul had had a serial rapist for 2 years and they didn't know about it because the women were too ashamed to come forward about it. What a tragedy. I still don't think he has been caught and they say there might be more than one of them.
Asians like to cover up crime statistics because they don't want to lose face.
I am all for women independence and rights but the fact is that they are more vulnerable to attack from men than men are because of pure biology. Women can't as often put themselves into the same situation as men and get away safe.

Thailand is a very safe place. You just need to follow common sense safety that you will follow anywhere else in the world. It is not safe, for any woman anywhere (especially if you are a foreigner in that country) to be walking around partying alone at night. I am not blaming it on her, the guy is an asshole and should have his penis removed.
The first thing Thai people told me when I came here was to never be walking around alone at night, or take a taxi by myself if possible.
This kind of thing could have happened anywhere.

True enough. But surely the most pressing need, based on the story you recount, is to change the whole way rape victims are perceived. To say that women 'can't put themselves in the same situation as men' is skirting around the issue.
The tragedy is that these women felt stigmatised - not that they were (perhaps) out of their homes at night.
That's true, but authorities around the world would rather a women stay at home where she is safe, than police areas where women are vunerable.
In todays society, one woman getting raped, against the saving of x amount of dollars, means the women will get raped.
How many news stories do you read, where cutbacks have dictated less or no policing.
This is not a pop at Thailand, this is in farang countries.
