Hippo on the run - hot news

    Thais hunt for missing hippo

    Hippopotamus. File photo.

CHIANG MAI: -- Thailand's Chiang Mai Night Safari has launched a search and rescue operation for a baby hippopotamus that went missing from the zoo's veterinary hospital last week, media reports said Sunday. The baby hippo was last seen in hospital on Thursday, soaking in a tub of water, the Bangkok Post said.

A security guard assigned to watch the hippo fell asleep and when he awoke the animal was gone.

Hospital staff found tracks leading to a nearby forest in the Chiang Mai Night Safari, which covers 127.6 hectares.

Officials dispatched 100 people to search for the hippo, but prospects of its survival are deemed low in light of the animal's youth and poor health.

The zoo, situated about 650 kilometres north of Bangkok, has been the target of criticism for poor management and mistreatment of animals in the past.

Simply unbelievable. Feel free to milk this as you wish.

I told him not to use that fake degree.

Thailand only looks like a zoo I said.

We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.

I thought it was about our Hippo and the degree also
Daniel Bedingfield claimed that his new album is what it would sound like if Sting, Stevie Wonder and Micheal Jackson were in a basement together - I haven't got the album so I'll have to imagine the sound of a blind bloke and a Geordie kicking the shit out of a pedophile.

100 people to search 300 acres for a Hippo.

    The odds aren't looking good

And who was assigned to close and lock the gate to the pen upon leaving?

No way. Poor management and animal cruelty??? Certainly not in Thailand.

Hey Johnh, might we get a link to the source?

    Link as requested.

How the fuck can you not be disturbed by an escaping hippo? Unless of course, the hippo tiptoed past the Somchai the sleeping guard.

If it's a female hippo, it is probably too young to milk and if it's male - that ain't milk!

    R.I.P

CHIANG MAI : A baby hippopotamus reported missing from Chiang Mai Night Safari has been found dead in a sewer.

The animal was discovered just 100m from the room at the veterinary hospital at the zoo from where it disappeared a week ago.

The ailing hippo was under 24-hour watch as it was being treated for an unknown condition but zoo authorities said the guard assigned to the task fell asleep.

Fifty zoo staff members and police conducted a week-long search of the 819-rai zoo area before a police team using a sniffer dog found the body of the three-week old female yesterday.

Police said it appeared to have been dead for several days.

The zoo has just 10 hippopotamuses - the dead infant was the newest member of the group. Sadly, it died before it was given a name.

    That's really sad.

And it took them a whole week to think of using a sniffer dog!

Sadly, it died before it was given a name.
