No kidding. Although, to be fair, the dramatis personae, at least on the UDD side, are constrained in the same way, so the debate, such as it is, mirrors at least the visible part of the situation.

I'm currently rereading Thak's Thailand: The Politics of Despotic Paternalism and am becoming convinced that Prem is as central to this as the Reds make out. We can talk about Prem, yes?

There is no doubt that Prem is central to this. You can talk about him, but I would urge you to exercise caution. His present role puts him in a kind of grey area.

^Yes. I believe there have been suggestions that LM law should extend to the Privy Council.

    As yet, it does not.

    Completely.

Can we talk about him? I'd presume so, but only partially of course. Anyway, things will be a lot easier when nature eventually takes its course. If I were the Reds, I'd build the base, solidify the movement and just be patient.

^In spite of yet another "last push" tone of apocalyptic endings around the million-man march, I think that is just what they are doing.

Thak's take, crudely put, is that Phibun dominated Thai politics from roughly 1935-1957. Then the Sarit era, 1957-1973. Then a few years of freeform slippage in a democratic direction, ending with the seating of Prem as PM in 1980. It is beginning to seem to me that we are witnessing the end of the Prem era and that this "periodicity" is more significant than any other.

Which would mean that Thailand has experienced only 3 "real" leaders in the 78 years since the Revolution. Weird.

    My apologies to Acharn Thak.

After that the brahman took some of the blood from the ground to write letters on the concrete posts of the gate."

My friend is an extremely devout Buddhist. She goes to Buddhist discussion groups almost every day. She told me they discussed this 'blood' topic and it is definitely not part of Buddhist practices of Thailand nor has it been in the past. It has to do with practices from non-Buddhist religions.

It is more than a nuisance. If you took all of the money spent on religious and monarchist extravagances here and applied it to building infrastructure, schools, etc. what would Thailand be like? Granted, if they money flowed into the current government system then a lot would be lost to corruption or 'pork barrel' in American English.

So, enlighten us with some facts then. What kind of prayers were said?

Its got very little to do with democracy. Its just about mob rule. Neither side has anything but lip service respect for the rule of law.

One side want their sub-set of venal self serving elite in power as it benefits them, the other side wants a slightly different sub-set for very similiar reasons. I dont see anything wrong with that, as such, but let's not pretend it is anything to do with democracy.

Its just one mob against another. An election will solve nothing, except perhaps cause enough chaos so one INDIVIDUAL can manuvere himself into a position grasp power again, along with whatever coterie of hanger ons he has cajoled and bribed to support his bid.

    30% voted for the democrats
35% voted for whatever thaksin's party was called at the time
35% voted for whoever for parties that will sell themselves to the highest bidder.

Whats the crushing need for an election except as a cover for another round of power plays, back stabbing, intrigues, and money grubbing? How does thailand as a country benefit from it?

you seem to be a little confused. first off, i don't think anyone, participants or otherwise, would class the type of rituals carried out as buddhist. they aren't. they belong more to the realm of spirit houses, amulets and sigils. nothing to do with buddhism.

secondly. 'elaborate religious ritual' can be anything a participant terms it to be. i could paint my head green and stand one-legged on a table whilst reciting parts of 'winnie the pooh'. if i want to call it genuine religious ritual then it is. participants decide.

^^ I think you need to understand what democracy is about and how it differs from mob rule.
