Two Britons nabbed for ATM thefts in Chon Buri

CHON BURI, June 29 - Two British men were arrested for alleged botched automatic teller machine (ATM) thefts in Si Racha district in the seaside province of Chon Buri, according to local police.

Alexander Milbourn, 25, and Shaun Edward Tracy, 34, were detained at their room in Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district as they are suspected in the attempted theft of an ATM at the Bank of Ayudhya’s Laem Chabang branch at late night of June 21, Pol Lt-Gen Panya Mamen, chief of Provincial Police Region 2 announced on Friday.

The two Britons said that they and a third man, identified only as Richard, also a suspect but who has so far evaded arrest, attempted the three ATM thefts in Si Racha district, at Bangkok Bank's Bo Win branch on June 14, Bank of Ayudhya’s Laem Chabang branch on June 21 and Bank of Ayudhya’s Bo Win branch on June 28.

The suspects explained that they fastened a tow sling around the ATM attached to the vehicle's bumper and then drove the car at high speed in order to pull the machine out of the bank's wall.

The men said that they had run out of money and were unemployed, so they decided to take money from the ATMs.

However, they failed to get cash from any machine in the three attempts.

Police seized a tow sling, a white sedan used for the June 21st ATM theft, a grey vehicle used for the June 28th ATM theft and a pickup truck found hidden in Bang Lamung district.

Initially, the pair was taken to Laem Chabang police station for further investigation and legal processing, while police are speeding up the search for the third man, who remains at large. (MCOT online news)

When I was in China I used to get followed around in supermarkets by staff members...it happened so regularly in so many different places that I finally asked someone why that was...I was told that Chinese people hear stories about how we westerners are prone to stealing shit...

Here's a headline they'll have to live with forever.

Two Chonburi Brits “Dumb & Dumber” Arrested in Failed ATM Heist

Two British men used a car to pull out an ATM unit off the wall in Chonburi. The two suspects confessed that they needed extra cash.

PATTAYA – June 29, 2012 [PDN]; Pol. Lt. Gen. Panya Mamen, commissioner section 2 and Pol. Maj. Gen. Jamnong Rattanakul, Commissioner Chonburi province reported the arrest of two British suspects charged with stealing ATMs.

The two British subjects: Mr. Alexander Milbourn age 25, and Mr. Shaun Edward Tracy age 34, with two heavy duty nylon slings, four hooks, a white Toyota Camry without a license plate, a bronze Nissan Teana, license number CHOR POR-5354 Bangkok and a black Nissan Navara, license number PHOR THOR-836 Chonburi.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Panya said that the two suspects had attempted stealing ATMs in Chonburi several times; first time June 14, a Bangkok Bank ATM, Borwin branch, second time June 21, a Bank of Ayudhya, Laem Chabang branch, and the third time on June 28, another Bank of Ayudhya ATM, Pakruam branch.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Jamnong Rattanakul said that they caught the two thieves by using the CCTV footage.

The detectives led by Pol. Col. Sakrapee Peawpanich, Superintendent and Pol. Lt. Yuthana Prasopsukmungdee, Laem Chabang police station went to the hardware store in Sriracha and asked about the heavy duty nylon slings. The shop owner confirmed that he had sold the slings the two foreigners.

Later on June 27, the hardware store owner called the police saying that two foreigners came to buy more nylon slings.

The police rushed to the store but the two foreigners had already left.

Later the police inspected the CCTV images and saw that the two foreigners drove a Nissan Navara pickup truck – the same as on the bank’s security camera.

The police team found the pickup truck belonging to Mr. John Lesly Milbourn age 58, British citizen who had already returned to England. Mr. Alex Milbourn, his son, was driving the pickup truck with his friend, Mr. Shauw Edward Tracy.

Mr. Alex and Mr. Shaun had rented a house in Soi Thepprasit, south Pattaya.

The police team arrested the two criminals at their the house along with a Nissan sedan and a Nissan Navara pickup truck. The white Toyota Camry also used in the crime was from a rental car company.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Jamnong said that the two suspects had been living in Pattaya for more than 10 years. They speak Thai fluently. They had arrived in Thailand on tourist visas and did not have any jobs.

The suspects said that there was another accomplice, Mr. “Richy” last name unknown , age about 30, still at large.

The two suspects said that they could not get the money out of the ATMs because they did not know how to open them and after yanking the ATM units out of the wall the alarm went off. The duo panicked and left the scene in a hurry.

Both ATM thieves have been charged with theft and Mr. “Richy”, the unidentified Briton is now wanted by Chonburi police.

I love the picture. A couple of the boys in brown look as if they can barely contain their laughter.

I'm sure lots of folks have thought of that approach.

Well, first they'll be allowed to call mom & dad and beg for money. I suspect the fines will be heavy.
