Thai Students Ranked Lower in English Skills

    Published : July 28, 2012

A recent study measuring the English skills of students in 10 Asian countries ranked Thailand in the middle of the pack. Researchers said the Thai educational system need overhauling. They also suggested that Thai students should learn a second foreign language besides English.

Mr. Anake Permvongsenee, the secretary of Education Council, reported that Thai students ranked 5th among 10 Asian nations in a study that compared the students’ English skills. He added that Vietnam was ranked higher than Thailand.

The study was part of a cooperative venture by Asian countries to compare policies and strategies in teaching foreign languages to students. The study noted fundamental flaws in Thailand’s educational system to teach a foreign language, with problems both inside and outside the system.
Thailand needs to improve the fundamentals of studying and teaching English and other foreign languages in a more systematic way. Related organizations should work together solve this urgent problem, the study stated.

The study also suggested that in the future Thai people should not study only English and Chinese language, but also other Asian languages, especially in neighboring countries. Within the next 20 years, Thai children should be able to speak three foreign languages, the study recommended.

The researcher said that the government policy of using the English language in Thailand still doesn’t have a clear strategy. Mr. Anake said he has talked with the secretary of the committee to develop bureaucratic systems. One proposal is that in the future, both English and Thai language should be included in official documents of all government units.

Mr. Anake will share the study results in future meetings with major educational organizations. The goal is to set up clear objectives for teaching English to Thai children with specific targets to be accomplished.

To be fair, they shouldn't be too beat up about it--look at the amount of money Korea pours into English language learning, yet they consistently score lower than any other country on TOEIC and other standardized tests that that nation loves. And Obama wants our education system to be more like theirs.

A high school curriculum that says more than "students will be able to speak English like a native speaker" would be a step in the right direction.

Those tables just go to show how worthless IQ scores are--some of the most successful engineers come from India, and south Asians are the wealthiest immigrant group in America. This is more a barometer of failing cultures than any genetic tendency.

Thailand as 5th is much better than the last time we had one of these threads. I think they were next to last. Besides a couple of points difference as an average means fuk all. IQ tests were invented by White people for White people. That's like testing the ability of tech school boys worldwide on their Honda Wave driving agility. Thailand #1 !!!!!!

I've always been blown away by Thai English teachers. They never properly learned English yet they teach it. They know no better.

IQ, short for an Intelligence Quotient is a score derived from a psychometric test designed to assess intelligence. The score is not an absolute measure of intelligence but it is, as any other unit of measurement, an attempt to determine the relative standing of an individual to a given group.

    Goobly gook...............

Common sense and good observation skills will always tell us more than these snake oil IQ salesmen.

Everybody know, as an example, that the average Canadian IQ is at least 10 points higher than the average American IQ.

Even if we removed those states south of the Mason Dixie line, we'd still have an eight point spread.

I never found Koreans to be that relatively higher in IQ than most other nations..............

    Pretty well.

I met many Foreign English teachers who could not put a sentence together....

    And yet there they were.

You can either laugh or cry.

I choose laughter and general merriment.

^^^^^ You don't read so well do you? That's the shit imbedded in your mind from your childhood brainwashing, dullard. If you had an IQ over 40 you'd already be aware of it. I'd score higher than you drugged with laughing gas in the middle of a dental procedure.

God are you stupid! How do you know their IQs, does it show up in their cheekbones?
