Four 17-year-old high school girls were arrested for prostitution at a central Bangkok hotel. They told police they engaged in prostitution because they wanted money to go out at night.
BANGKOK – September 7, 2012 [PDN]: at 8:30 p.m., four girls engaged in prostitution were arrested by more than 10 police officers from the Children and Women Protection sub-division, under the direction of Pol. Lt. Col. Samrerng Songsiang with the vice Children and Women Protection sub-division police; and Mr. Pisit Sukdanarong, adviser to the minister of the Public Health Ministry. The four teen girls were arrested in room number 217 at the De Mock Hotel, number 78 Pracha Thippatai road, Phan Thom sub-district, Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok. Pol. Lt. Col. Samrerng, said the police had been investigating reports of online prostitution, and learned about a madam named “Ging soi Mahadtha” who was using the Internet to solicit clients. So the police set up a sting, and undercover officers contacted the madam, agreeing to pay 2,000 baht for sexual services with each girl. At the hotel, the police showed their identities and arrested the four girls. Mr. Pisit from the Ministry of Public Heath said the arrests were a joint co-operative effort with the Children and Youth security division forces, after reports were received of underage females engaged in prostitution. After their arrests, the four girls told police they were all high school students. They had been convinced or advised by friends to become prostitutes, because they did not have enough money to go out at night. Mr. Pisit issued a warning to naïve young girls about getting involved with madams using them illegally. He cautioned youngsters who want to sell their bodies to strangers to abandon the idea before it is too late. There is also an increased risk of HIV infection for adolescents who engage in prostitution and might later infect their peers with the deadly virus. Then four girls were brought to investigate by the police, who initially charged them with “supplying and engaging in prostitution.” The police will conduct a thorough investigation to track down the real providers behind the illegal prostitution operation.

When I was in the Philippines, regular, (albeit slutty), girls in the pubs/discos would duck out and short time with foreigners just so they could go back in and drink more; and their Filipino boyfriends would encourage it!

There was a big scandal about Japanese schoolgirls doing this when I lived in Japan. Usually for brand name stuff, apparently Louis Vuitton handbags were most popular.
The Japanese term for this is Enjo Kosai which translates as 'compensated dating'. That's one way of putting it!
Yeesh--one of the most uncomfortable feelings I had in SEA was the sheer power of my socioeconomic background. The power that my money had to get sex, service, and other things really made me uncomfortable. I know that's the biggest appeal for others, though.

I think for most people that spend enough time in Asia or in the "non-West" they get over this idea.
It's your money that you either earned, were lucky enough to get, got by birthright, etc.
If you asked your average whore what she would do if she had the money and were a man...she would probably say she would buy good meat, alcohol, and top-quality whores.
Even ask most people who live in corrupt countries and complain about the corruption what they would do if THEY had the power...and they would probably laugh and tell you, "Same thing; rob the place blind!"
If they don't feel any guilt over the state of things then I'm sure not.

A few months back there were 2 15 year old girls in Toronto running an underage prostitution ring basically recruiting girls on Facebook.
You do know that many Thai girls have already had kids by 14-15 and their father or brothers were nailing them before that?
Canada is a pretender contender in these sorts of things...

I've heard this a lot on the Thai forums, never seen any evidence of it.
I'm sure it's more prevalent in the country villages and would be more prevalent than in western countries but it is by no means endemic.
We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.
Why would that be?
Poverty, clan like village environments, not that different to pre-enlightenment Europe.
