The Minister of Education Prof. Dr. Suchart Thadathamrongvech signed the ministerial announcement about new schedule for the commencement of university semesters on 14 September 2012.
Since Thailand’s membership of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 will result in changes in trade, workforce and education among others, the Ministry of Education has formulated some policies to facilitate these changes. These cover such areas as the dissemination of ASEAN knowledge, preparation in foreign languages for teachers and students in Thailand, the promotion of student and educational personnel exchange and the preparation of educational free zones in which Thailand will serve as ASEAN’s educational hub.
In order to enable the start of university semesters in Thailand to match those of international and ASEAN universities in 2015, to benefit Thai high school students who have to prepare themselves for higher education and to facilitate Thai universities with student admissions and effective higher education management, the Ministry of Education kindly asks all universities in Thailand to change their academic calendar for every course and start the new academic year in August or September from the academic year of 2014 onwards.
Announced on 14 September 2012

This is a bigger change than it may seem at first glance. I've heard that eventually it will include all schools. School will be in session during Songkran, obviously they'll take that week off. Also, the October break will be moved to December?
