    Private tutoring...

Can any of you guy give me some tips on how to teach private Ss. Yes i am an experienced teacher but i have never worked in this field before, its always been in a public sch or training schools.

So what should i do ( presuming the Ss are around 8-12 yrs old), do i interview them / what materials can i use etc...

Also take into consideration that i will not be teaching thai kids but taiwanese, so maybe these taiwanese kids have a shyness problem that i have to work around.. they dont even talk their own language, and it takes them 6 minutes to get an answer (if any)..

    Any suggestions...???

I will bet you in general especially one on one that Thai kids are at least as shy if not more so than the Taiwanese.

Try and be flexible for the first few classes until you see what works.

Get the parents to tell you exactly what they want, ask the kid what they want. That way both will think they're getting their own way from the start. Meanwhile you do what you want - everybody's happy!

Turn down private classes that don't "feel right" (unless they pay very well )! Can get to be a right royal pain in the arse very quickly.

Well the taiwanese/chinese have the sixth sense so i would disagree with your comment thereaging one. Its the taiwanese/chinese culture to 'keep quiet' and dont make a noise...be a little scared mouse. They've written songs about it..

Thai kids are a pain in the arse sometimes, but atleast they TRY to talk english. Thai's are generally more fun to teach, but then less rewarding as their english ability isnt great..

So it comes down to culture...

I am also very interested in this subject. I am particularly interested in what kind of materials are good for personal tuturing with Thai studebts.

My students are university students. Some are beginners, some are intermediate, and some are upper-intermediate. Any help here would be appreciated for tutoring uni students at beginner, intermediate, and upper-intermediate English levels. Thanks.

    Hey Evan,

Hmm, well the feedback has been abit slow on this topic...not sure exactly why..

But yeah i have had one or two private students myself but they dont last longer than one or two sessions with me. Partly becos im disorganised and havent got any plan madeup, then i dont know really where to begin with P/S...

Maybe your better off than me..

Please ask them what books are you studying. Buy the books, tutor them, and make my job easier.
