ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
The director of the foreign language department at my university has asked me to help gather information in order to develop a course outline for a tourism/hospitality program. The program would consist of three month intervals (pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper-intermediate) so I'm looking for a textbook series as well as some well-developed supplementary material that hopefully would make this a successful enterprise. The students taking the course would be, at the very least, pre-intermediate English language speakers. Any ideas/input would be appreciated.

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
thats my field. How old are the students? Your boss is setting much too lofty goals. 1 semester equals 4 months. Thats one level without much of a leap up. The books I use are geared at upper intermediate. But I also deal with other faculties who are just barely intermediate at best. I have good texts for both levels.

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
Thanks. As I mentioned, the students will already have a pretty decent foundation so they're not beginners in any sense. Right now regular, 4 skills and grammar, classes are 3 hour sessions/5 days a week that cover 12-15 modules in a ten week period so the new classes would follow the same regiment. I've been surfing the web since I posted and have copied a heap of material that I need to sift through. I've come across "English for the Travel and Tourism Industry", by Leo Jones, Cambridge University Press as well as a Mcmillan book so far, but am curious as to what current textbooks teachers are using. Also, texbooks aside, I'd be interested in a a nine month syllabus. I want to develop some multi-media so I'm not too limited as to what I can present. Cheers!

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
I will posts the texts I recommend tomorrow morning as I have promised my computer to the kids tonight. If any thought is given to management I would recommend High Season. For the lower levels Highly Recommended is also a very good book. Both of these are geared more to the hotel trade.

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
Pucky. I would make a pre-test to test your potential students level of reading, writing and speaking. All too often on these courses you find a wide range of abilities and a course director who tells you you have intermediate students. Half way trhough you find 3 exceptional students and 7 or 8 who can barely read. If you set your course up fopr intermediates make sure this is what you get. Too often its about mums on seats and money in the wallet for these course directors.

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
Books for Hotel and Tourism that are recommended are:
High Season, comes with Cassettee tape also.
There is another one that deals a lot with hotel industry as well, and is being used by some of the staff at the Armari hotel in Patunam and they liked it. I can't remember the title, but it is directly focuses on Hotel mostly and it comes with a CD as well. Has quite a bit of real life situation role plays to work with also.
Go to Rham Universerity and to Chula and check out their bookstores and see what they use and maybe you can adapt their material to yours.
You might also want to go around and see what other Hospalitiy business are using as well, and get some ideas. It is a good market in Bangkok.

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
We've ordered these books, but I'm worried about the redundancy. We shall see...
Highly Recommended:Elementary to Pre-Intermediate
High Season- English level:Intermediate
Going International:Upper-Intermediate (same author as High Season)
English for International Tourism: Pre-intermediate - Upper Intermediate
What about upper management books for tourism/hospitality?

Re: ESP - Tourism/Hospitality
^ The "English for International Tourism: Pre-intermediate - Upper Intermediate" is a series from Pearson so we're looking at two options. Unfortunately, we don't have the opportunity to view any of these books at the local bookstore so we have to order them. Wank away...
