TEFL vs CELTA. T's who hold both, please comment.
I hold a TEFL and have 6 years experience. I recently observed a CELTA qualified teacher and, while I approved of his lesson planning, I didn't learn anything new.
I also thought that he talked too much in the classroom.
Is a CELTA better than a TEFL? If so, HOW?

Re: TEFL vs CELTA. T's who hold both, please comment.
I don't have a TEFL, but I have a CELTA. I know others that have the TEFL. From what I know..the CELTA is more geared towards teaching adults. The CELTA focuses more on a certain system of teaching, and they want teacher talk time to be very LOW, with more student talk time. The CELTA focuses a lot on grammar, and they want you to use a certain method to teach. The TEFL is not always the same hours for theory and teaching practice as the CELTA. Don't know if that helps any.

If someone, who has a CELTA, is teaching and they are talking a lot then they are ignoring the stuff they were taught on the course. Teacher talking time should be at a minimum for any CELTA graduate. It is drummed into you from day one.
Other than that I can't really comment as I only have a CELTA.

It's actually the wisest comment on the whole thread so far, if only you had the brain to understand it.
Almost nobody has done both.
This means comments are always one sided, as has been shown by countless threads on this topic over the years.
By the way, what's a 'TEFL'? As far as I know it stands for 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language'.
I've honestly never understood how any one can 'have a' Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
It's also quite comical that after teaching for 6 years you'd expect observing one lesson by a CELTA holder to open your eyes to the brilliance of the CELTA, scorp.
If you're now doubting that any four week TEFL course is the fountain of all TEFL wisdom, then I'd say your doubts are well founded.
What does it mean if one CELTA holder talks to much in their class? Only that they need to talk less, surely.
If you're back home driving a car and somebody cuts you up do you question the UK's methods of driving tuition, testing and licensing?

Isn't CELTA essentially a brand of TEFL course?

They both give you a bit of experience before you get out there, so that's a positive thing. I've been in government schools with teachers who don't have a degree, tefl or celta and are not even native speakers, they also lie about where they're from. Surely any extra experience is an advantage.

Re: TEFL vs CELTA. T's who hold both, please comment.
How would you judge a course based on how one person who took that course teaches?
By that logic, I could go to college, have one college professor who sucked my ass at teaching, and then say "gee, I guess PhD's just ain't worth spit. Am I right, Cletus?".
I have no idea which course is better, but why in the world would you take both?

Cyrille has it nailed. I will not use "spot on" cause I've been a naughty boy and scolded by none other than Bangkok Phil himself. Thus, as I'm learning British slang and loving it - his scolding has scared me. I am, a septic (oops!). TEFL, EFL, MELFA, YOMAMMAELF, etc is just garbage....cash cows... I'm sure BP will ban me now but I've got bucks, friends, and plenty of time - I, unlike George Bush, relish a good fight. Bring it on, Mofo..."

Re: TEFL vs CELTA. T's who hold both, please comment.
CELTA is a good qualification. However, it is a designed as a pre-service qualification even though many candidates have had some teaching experience.
As with anything else, there are great teachers who have had no formal training at all. Six year's experience is substantial, and assuming you are a good teacher, then you should have learnt nothing from watching someone who has taken a 4-week course.
I'd suggest that you observe a DELTA or RSA DipTEFLA qualified teacher, then you'd definitely learn.
