Ok, I had a long and involved discussion last night on whether it was "ok" to say (and teach) "I'll write you" or "I'll write to you." Now, I would never say, "I'll call to you," which seems to be very similar to "I"ll write to you." So is either way ok? is one an American version and one a British version? I leave this to your esteemed persons!
I'll take a stab at this one.
"I will write to you." You are talking about an event that happens in the future. You will write. So what will you write? If you say, "I'll write you," you are saying that you will write a person (literally). "I'll write to you" says that you will write to a person; that is, contact a specific individual via written communication. The word "to" shows direction (in this case, a written piece of correspondence going TO a particular person).
Technically, "I'll write to you" and "I'll call to you" are grammatically correct BUT not in common use. Most people say "I'll write you" and "I'll call you," with the unspoken understanding that the letter or call will go to a specific individual.
Afterthought: The literal meaning of "I'll call you" is simply saying the word "you," or speaking someone's name.![]()

think it's an american/brit thing isn't it?
i would never say or teach, "i'll write you" because i'm british, some would and that's cool.
"...ever wonder why they kill the weak ones, baby?"
I think it stems partly from the American desire to abbreviate and simplify the language. OK we all know what is meant when someone says "I'll write you" and since it is in common usage I personally feel it should be taught. I am not an English teacher however, merely making an observation.
If Thai's are going to speak the language, and understand what is said to them, then surely it has to be taught.
Even if thy're told it's an Americanism.![]()

'I'll write you' is an Americanism but becoming more common in the UK but to this old fart does not seem to make sense. It seems to me to say 'I'll write 'YOU" (on the whiteboard, etc.)
'I'll call to you' is not grammatically correct but poetic licence. I cannot think of a single instance where I would use 'will call to' Consider using 'speak to' or 'talk to'
agree hippo, i personally think "i'll write you" is horrible! so ugly.
"I'll mail you" is another good one.
Where are you thinking of sending me?

"We're all very different people. We're not Watusi, we're not Spartans, we're Americans. With a capital "A", huh? And you know what that means? Do you? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts."
